Sea Ice Rheology Experiment (SIREx): 1. Scaling and Statistical Properties of Sea-Ice Deformation Fields

Amelie Bouchat et al.

Summary: As sea-ice modeling becomes more advanced, models are now able to accurately resolve deformation features in Arctic sea ice. The Sea Ice Rheology Experiment (SIREx) aims to evaluate state-of-the-art sea-ice models using different representations of sea-ice physics and model configurations. The study finds that both plastic and brittle sea-ice rheologies can reproduce observed deformation statistics, but model configuration and physical parameterizations have impacts as important as the choice of rheology.

Lasting impact of winds on Arctic sea ice through the ocean's memory

Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of wind on Arctic sea ice through numerical simulations, showing that changes in halosteric height induced by wind perturbations significantly affect sea ice characteristics regionally even years later. The study reveals that the ocean's memory of wind forcing can lead to changes in sea ice characteristics with different spatial patterns, particularly associated with Arctic Oscillation, Arctic Dipole Anomaly, and Beaufort High modes. Additionally, the dynamical impact of the ocean on sea ice varies seasonally, being stronger in summer and weaker in winter and spring, with a potential for stronger ocean impact on sea ice in a warming climate as Arctic sea ice declines.

On the statistical properties of sea-ice lead fraction and heat fluxes in the Arctic

Einar Olason et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the observed sea-ice lead fraction in the Central Arctic exhibits a monofractal spatial scaling, while being well represented by the neXtSIM model. The heat flux through leads may be significantly higher than that through unbroken ice, with a multifractal scaling of heat fluxes observed in the Central Arctic. The high-flux tail of the PDF in the wider Arctic is mainly attributed to coastal polynyas, while the scaling of simulated lead fraction and heat fluxes is weakly dependent on model resolution.
