Fully Dynamic Earthquake Cycle Simulations on a Nonplanar Fault Using the Spectral Boundary Integral Element Method (sBIEM)

Pierre Romanet et al.

Summary: The spectral boundary integral element method (sBIEM) is a suitable method for modeling fully dynamic earthquake cycle simulations. This paper presents an extension of sBIEM to mildly nonplanar faults by applying a small-slope approximation of the fault geometry. The main effect of nonplanar fault geometry is shown to be the change in normal traction along the fault, which is incorporated into the existing sBIEM methodology. This approach enables efficient modeling of fully dynamic seismic cycle simulations on nonplanar faults.

Subduction earthquake sequences in a non-linear visco-elasto-plastic megathrust

Luca Dal Zilio et al.

Summary: We present a 2-D thermomechanical computational framework for simulating earthquake sequences in a non-linear visco-elasto-plastic compressible medium. The method incorporates an adaptive time-stepping and an invariant formulation of the classical friction law, allowing for the analysis of earthquake sequences and the exploration of their physical connections.

Summary: The 2016 Central Italy earthquake sequence is characterized by remarkable rupture complexity, with multiple fault planes possibly rupturing simultaneously. Dynamic rupture simulations using complex models with spatially heterogeneous dynamic parameters show better agreement with seismic and geodetic observations, validating the assumed mechanical viability of the rupture models.

A Spectral Boundary-Integral Method for Quasi-Dynamic Ruptures of Multiple Parallel Faults

Sylvain Barbot

Summary: Numerical models of rupture dynamics offer insights into fault failure physics. Stress interactions among multiple faults remain numerically challenging, but this study derives elastostatic Green's functions to efficiently calculate stress interactions in the Fourier domain. The research demonstrates the method's relevance through simulations of single and multiple parallel faults' rupture dynamics under frictional control, showcasing the utility of exploring fault dynamics with many degrees of freedom.
