The Earth's Surface Controls the Depth-Dependent Seismic Radiation of Megathrust Earthquakes

Jiuxun Yin et al.

Summary: Megathrust earthquakes exhibit a common seismic radiation style where low-frequency energy is emitted from the shallow part of the fault and high-frequency energy is emitted from the deep part. The interaction between seismic waves and ruptures with the Earth's free surface is identified as the main mechanism behind this depth-frequency relation, with the realistic Earth structure further enhancing this relationship.
