Evidence for carbonatite derived from the earth's crust: The late Paleoproterozoic carbonate-rich magmatic rocks in the southeast Tarim Craton, northwest China

Hailin Wu et al.

Summary: This study documents the formation of large-scale igneous carbonate-rich rocks within the crust in the southeast Tarim Craton, challenging the prevailing view that carbonatites are derived from the mantle. The rocks show clear intrusive contact with wall rocks and contain xenoliths, indicating an igneous origin. Isotopic analysis and modeling suggest that these carbonate-rich rocks were formed through partial melting of impure marble at crustal level via fluid-present melting. This finding has significant implications for crust rheology and global carbon cycling.

Crustal Derivation of the ca. 475 Ma Eppawala Carbonatites in Sri Lanka

Jing Wang et al.

Summary: The Eppawala carbonatites in Sri Lanka show crustal fingerprints and are more similar to orogenic carbonatites, possibly originating from a mixture of basement gneisses and marbles during regional metamorphism. Our findings suggest that these carbonatites constitute another rare example of a carbonatitic magma derived from melting of a sedimentary carbonate protolith, and other orogenic carbonatites with similar features should be re-examined to re-evaluate their origin.

The pyroclastic breccias from Cabezo Negro de Tallante (SE Spain): Is there any relation with carbonatitic magmatism

Francesca Innocenzi et al.

Summary: Recent studies suggest that the carbonate component in the volcanic breccia of the Cabezo Negro de Tallante area in SE Spain has a secondary origin, not derived from mantle carbonatite melts. The formation of these carbonates is explained as a result of in-situ fragmentation of the volcanic breccia and subsequent secondary infiltration of carbonates, rather than due to carbonatitic melts at mantle to lower crustal depths.
