Dissolved Organic Carbon Mobilization Across a Climate Transect of Mesic Boreal Forests Is Explained by Air Temperature and Snowpack Duration

Keri L. Bowering et al.

Summary: The mobilization of soil dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is influenced by biogeochemical and hydrological processes, and in seasonally snow-covered ecosystems, the snowpack plays a crucial role in protecting the soil and affecting the release of annual precipitation. This study found that mean annual DOC fluxes decreased with decreasing latitude, had no relationship with interannual precipitation, but showed a positive relationship with interannual air temperature. Air temperature and snowpack duration were the best indices for describing interannual variability in DOC flux.

A Terrestrial-Aquatic Model Reveals Cross-Scale Interactions Regulate Lateral Dissolved Organic Carbon Transport From Terrestrial Ecosystems

Ceara J. Talbot et al.

Summary: This study develops a conceptual framework of lateral carbon transport (LCT), focusing on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) transport, and operationalizes it with a coupled terrestrial-aquatic carbon and hydrology model. The research finds that climate is the strongest driver of LCT-DOC, with precipitation positively related and temperature inversely related to LCT-DOC at continental scales. Plant traits, especially water use efficiency, also interact strongly with climate and have a measurable influence on LCT-DOC.

How humans alter dissolved organic matter composition in freshwater: relevance for the Earth's biogeochemistry

Marguerite A. Xenopoulos et al.

Summary: Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is crucial in freshwater ecosystems, but its composition can be altered by human activities, impacting processes like carbon outgassing, nutrient cycles, ecosystem metabolism, and drinking water quality in contrasting ways. Understanding the links between DOM properties and biogeochemical dynamics is essential for addressing future environmental challenges.

Identifying Key Environmental Factors Explaining Temporal Patterns of DOC Export From Watersheds in the Conterminous United States

Xinyuan Wei et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing nitrogen deposition leads to increased DOC export, while increasing sulfur deposition leads to declining DOC export. Precipitation was identified as the major factor influencing DOC export, and the seasonal pattern is regulated by air temperature. Additionally, a larger area of wetlands within a watershed is positively correlated with higher rates of DOC export.

Identifying Key Environmental Factors Explaining Temporal Patterns of DOC Export From Watersheds in the Conterminous United States

Xinyuan Wei et al.

Summary: This study examined the impacts of climate, atmospheric deposition, and land cover on the export of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from watersheds in the conterminous United States. The results showed that precipitation was the most important factor on an annual scale, nitrogen deposition was positively correlated with DOC export, and sulfur deposition was negatively correlated. The seasonal pattern of DOC export was regulated by air temperature.
