Designing an Observing System to Study the Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) of the Earth in the 2020s

E. Natasha Stavros et al.

Summary: Observations of planet Earth from space are important for science and society, and the US agencies prioritize these observations to maximize their investments. The most recent survey identified the need for a visible to shortwave infrared imaging spectrometer and a multispectral thermal infrared imager to study Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) and its impacts on climate change. The analysis helped recommend three candidate architectures for development and highlighted opportunities for international collaboration.

Using ECOSTRESS to Observe and Model Diurnal Variability in Water Temperature Conditions in the San Francisco Estuary

Rebecca N. Gustine et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between surface and subsurface conditions in the Bay Delta using spaceborne thermal measurements and in situ sensor data. The results show a strong correlation between surface temperature measurements from ECOSTRESS and Landsat-8 with bulk water temperatures. A simple harmonic regression model can effectively capture the diurnal variability and predict bulk water temperature.

Monitoring environmental and climate goals for European agriculture: User perspectives on the optimization of the Copernicus evolution offer

Emma Schiavon et al.

Summary: There is a vicious cycle between agricultural production and climate change, with new environmental and climate change goals facing monitoring challenges. The use of remote sensing technologies can significantly improve monitoring, but environmental managers face limitations and shortcomings due to a purely technology-driven approach to satellite missions.

NASA's surface biology and geology designated observable: A perspective on surface imaging algorithms

Kerry Cawse-Nicholson et al.

Summary: The paper summarizes the Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) as a Designated Targeted Observable (DO) recommended in the 2017-2027 National Academies' Decadal Survey, focusing on agriculture, natural habitats, water use/quality, and urban development. It reviews existing algorithms in each category and synthesizes the findings of over 130 scientists.

Missing the Reef for the Corals: Unexpected Trends Between Coral Reef Condition and the Environment at the Ecosystem Scale

Eric J. Hochberg et al.

Summary: Many coral reefs worldwide are in decline, risking ecosystem goods and services for millions of people. However, our understanding of the relationship between coral reefs and their environments is lacking, underscoring the need for uniform, high-density data for modeling and predicting their future.

Monetising the savings of remotely sensed data and information in Burn Area Emergency Response (BAER) wildfire assessment

Richard Bernknopf et al.

Summary: The study showed that using satellite imagery as part of the BAER program is cost-effective, saving significant costs compared to relying on aerial reconnaissance. Through evaluations of the Elk Complex wildfire incident and a multi-incident map production program, it was found that utilizing Landsat can save up to $35 million over a 5-year period.
