Wind speed and direction estimation from wave spectra using deep learning

Haoyu Jiang

Summary: Ocean wave measurements can be used to estimate wind information from about 40 minutes ago. In this study, deep neural networks were employed to estimate wind speed and direction based on the first five Fourier coefficients of buoys. The estimated wind speed has a root-mean-square error of around 1.1 m/s, and the wind direction has an error of about 14 degrees when the wind speed is between 7-25 m/s. This model can be applied not only for wind estimation of compact wave buoys but also for quality control of wind and wave measurements from meteorological buoys.

Calibration of low-cost PurpleAir outdoor monitors using an improved method of calculating PM2.5

Lance Wallace et al.

Summary: Hourly PM2.5 measurements from PurpleAir monitors and nearby EPA stations in California were compared over an 18-month period, using an alternative calculation method (ALT) which outperformed Plantower's estimates. A calibration factor was empirically derived for PurpleAir estimates, showing different responses to wildfire smoke compared to normal ambient PM2.5.

Surface-based nocturnal air temperature inversions in southern Poland and their influence on PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations in Upper Silesia

Tadeusz Niedzwiedz et al.

Summary: The study investigated the frequency, strength, and seasonal variations of surface-based temperature inversions (SBTIs) in Upper Silesia, Poland. It was found that SBTIs were most frequent in summer and least frequent in winter, with deeper inversions occurring more often in summer. Winter SBTIs were identified as a main factor contributing to high concentrations of particulate matter pollutants in the atmosphere.
