Diagnostic- and sex-based differences in depression symptoms in autistic and neurotypical early adolescents

Jessica M. Schwartzman et al.

Summary: The study revealed that autism spectrum disorder and female gender may lead to higher risks of depression, and depressive symptoms related to interpersonal problems and negative self-esteem are more common in autism spectrum disorder. Autistic males and females showed similar severity and types of depressive symptoms, but differences emerged when compared to neurotypical peers.

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of dialectical behaviour therapy skills training (DBT-ST) in autistic adults without intellectual disability. The results supported the feasibility of providing DBT-ST for this population, with high overall satisfaction ratings and perceived benefits of the intervention reported by participants.

Summary: This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Repetitive Behavior Scale-Revised (RBS-R) in autistic individuals and recommended breaking down the total score into different dimensions for improved accuracy. A five-dimensional factor structure was proposed, with recommendations for future RRB measure development.

Exploring the autism spectrum: Moderating effects of neuroticism on stress reactivity and on the association between social context and negative affect

Summary: Neuroticism levels are higher in adults with ASD compared to controls, and neuroticism moderates the association between appraised stress and negative affect as well as the association between social context and negative affect in ASD.

Co-occurring trajectories of anxiety and insistence on sameness behaviour in autism spectrum disorder

Danielle A. Baribeau et al.

Summary: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have increased susceptibility to anxiety disorders, with insistence on same behavior playing a predictive role. By studying the longitudinal trajectories of insistence on sameness and anxiety in ASD children, it was found that high preschool insistence on sameness may be associated with elevated current or future anxiety symptoms. This concurrent assessment may help in understanding current symptom profiles and anticipating future trajectories in ASD children.

Investigating the structure of trait rumination in autistic adults: A network analysis

Zachary J. Williams et al.

Summary: This study used psychological network analysis to investigate the structure of rumination in autistic individuals and its relationship with depressive symptoms. The results showed strong positive relationships between all aspects of ruminative thinking in autistic adults, with self-directed negative cognitions being particularly central in the network. The most strongly related depressive symptoms to rumination in autistic adults were sadness and guilt.

Non-verbal IQ and change in restricted and repetitive behavior throughout childhood in autism: a longitudinal study using the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised

V. Courchesne et al.

Summary: This study explored the association between age and non-verbal IQ on 15 RRB symptoms in children with ASD over time. Results showed that the proportion of children showing RRB tended to diminish with age, except for sensitivity to noise and circumscribed interests. Higher NVIQ was associated with more stable behavior over time, while lower NVIQ was associated with a higher prevalence of certain RRB.

Depression in independent young adults on the autism spectrum: Demographic characteristics, service use, and barriers

Shuting Zheng et al.

Summary: Depression is common among adults on the autism spectrum, with a majority of those currently depressed having received a formal diagnosis. Females are more likely than males to have a depression diagnosis and treatment. Medication is the most common form of treatment, and likelihood of receiving treatment is higher for those with a formal diagnosis and higher education levels. Financial and insurance issues are common barriers to accessing treatment for depression.

Measuring Depression in Autistic Adults: Psychometric Validation of the Beck Depression Inventory-II

Zachary J. Williams et al.

Summary: Using item response theory, this study examined the psychometric properties of the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) in a sample of 947 autistic adults. The results showed that BDI-II latent trait scores exhibited strong reliability, construct validity, and moderate ability to discriminate between depressed and nondepressed adults on the autism spectrum, indicating that it is a valid measure of depressive symptoms in autistic adults. A free online score calculator has been created to facilitate the use of BDI-II latent trait scores for clinical and research applications.
