Thermal structure of Mars' middle and upper atmospheres: Understanding the impacts of dynamics and solar forcing

S. K. Jain et al.

Summary: We present six years of temperature observations of Mars' middle and upper atmospheres during the day, obtained using the Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph instrument aboard the MAVEN spacecraft. Our results reveal strong long-term variability in thermospheric temperatures, which is linked to Martian seasons and the solar cycle. Both the thermosphere and mesosphere exhibit pronounced short-term variations, indicating a coupling with the lower atmosphere. Additionally, we identify a significant local time effect, with the thermosphere being colder in the morning and warmer in the evening.

Analytic and numerical methods for the Abel transform of exponential functions for planetary and cometary atmospheres

B. Hubert et al.

Summary: The article focuses on calculating indefinite integrals using the Abel transform and recovering emission rate profiles of planetary and cometary atmospheres through inverse Abel transform fitting. Experimental results show that this method is effective, especially when the observed atmospheric properties deviate from the assumed ones.

CO2 retrievals in the Mars daylight thermosphere from its 4.3 mu m limb emission measured by OMEGA/MEx

Sergio Jimenez-Monferrer et al.

Summary: A new retrieval scheme for atmospheric composition using non-local thermodynamic equilibrium processes is presented, applied to Mars CO2 infrared limb emissions measured by the OMEGA instrument on Mars Express (MEx). The study analyzed data from different MEx orbital configurations to determine the precision and vertical resolution of CO2 profiles.

Gravity Wave Activity in the Martian Atmosphere at Altitudes 20-160 km From ACS/TGO Occultation Measurements

Ekaterina D. Starichenko et al.

Summary: Observations of gravity wave-induced temperature disturbances in the Martian atmosphere were obtained using the mid-infrared (MIR) spectrometer on board the Trace Gas Orbiter. Various techniques were explored to distinguish disturbances and background temperature, with results showing enhanced wave dissipation in the mesopause region and no direct correlation between wave amplitude and Brunt-Vaisala frequency. The study provides valuable insights into the dynamics of gravity waves on Mars and their impact on the general circulation models.
