The Curiosity Rover's Exploration of Glen Torridon, Gale Crater, Mars: An Overview of the Campaign and Scientific Results

Summary: The Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity explored the clay mineral-bearing Glen Torridon region from January 2019 to January 2021, including a short campaign on the Greenheugh pediment. The Glen Torridon region hosts abundant phyllosilicates and exhibits a great diversity and abundance of sulfur-bearing organic molecules.

CRISM-Based High Spatial Resolution Thermal Inertia Mapping Along Curiosity's Traverses in Gale Crater

Summary: Thermal inertia is a key property for describing the thermophysical characteristics of geologic materials. This study presents an approach to estimate apparent thermal inertias (ATI) from observations of the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM), which provides higher spatial resolution than other orbital data sets. The ATI estimates are used to analyze and characterize surface properties in different regions on Mars, such as the abundance of large grains in basaltic sand fields, the increase in rock fragments on the Vera Rubin ridge, the presence of wind-blown sand on the Greenheugh pediment, and the exposure of bench-like bedrock in Glen Torridon.

Summary: Evolved gas analysis data from the Sample Analysis at Mars instrument suite confirmed the presence of Fe-rich smectite, carbonate, oxidized organics, Fe/Mg sulfate, and chloride in sedimentary rocks from the Glen Torridon region of Gale crater on Mars. The mineralogy and chemistry data suggest that the environmental history of the region involved alteration with fluids of variable redox potential, chemistry and pH under a range of fluid-to-rock ratio conditions. This indicates the past habitability of the GT region and the availability of carbon for potential microbial life, although the lack of significant nitrogen may have limited microbial habitability.

The Physical Properties and Geochemistry of Grains on Aeolian Bedforms at Gale Crater, Mars

Summary: This study reports on the physical properties and geochemistry of aeolian bedform grains along the Curiosity rover traverse in Gale crater. The dominant grains in the study area are <150 μm in size, with coarser grains present on larger active bedforms.
