Treatment outcomes of patients with MDR-TB and its determinants at referral hospitals in Ethiopia

Mengistu K. Wakjira et al.

Summary: This study investigated the determinants of treatment outcomes in patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) at referral hospitals in Ethiopia. The results showed that patients with low body mass index and comorbidities had a higher risk of death.

Evolution of Drug-Resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis Strains and Their Adaptation to the Human Lung Environment

Anna Allue-Guardia et al.

Summary: In the past two decades, drug-resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis have emerged as a global public health threat, leading to the need for new strategies for tuberculosis prevention and treatment. The evolution of drug-resistant M.tb depends on factors such as bacterial fitness, genetic background, and adaptation to the environment, as well as host-specific and environmental factors. Whole-genome transcriptomics and genome-wide association studies have provided insights into the complexity of M.tb drug resistance and its underlying molecular mechanisms.

Predictors and Trends of MDR/RR-TB in Shenzhen China: A Retrospective 2012-2020 Period Analysis

Ji Lecai et al.

Summary: In Shenzhen, cases of MDR/RR-TB were detected during 2012-2020, with increasing treatment enrollment and decreasing MDR-TB rates after 2017. The decreasing trends may reflect the efficacy of improved strategies, but their long-term impact on the MDR-TB burden remains to be investigated. The predictors of MDR-TB identified in our study should be considered when developing targeted MDR-TB control strategies.

Unfavorable Treatment Outcome and Its Predictors Among Patients with Multidrug-Resistance Tuberculosis in Southern Ethiopia in 2014 to 2019: A Multi-Center Retrospective Follow-Up Study

Lemlem Bogale et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the unfavorable treatment outcome and its predictors among patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in Southern Ethiopia. The study found that predictors for unfavorable treatment outcome included hospitalization for care, male sex, and low hemoglobin levels, while attending tertiary education was associated with a decreased hazard of unfavorable treatment outcome. The results suggest the need for enhanced management and intervention measures for MDR-TB patients.

Comparison of profile and treatment outcomes between elderly and non-elderly tuberculosis patients in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu, South India

Sharan Murali et al.

Summary: This study investigated the demographic and treatment outcome differences between elderly and non-elderly tuberculosis patients in South India, finding significant associations between male sex, OBC caste, poor education, unemployment, marriage, alcohol consumption, and increased prevalence of elderly TB. Unfavorable outcomes, including death, were significantly higher among the elderly group compared to non-elderly counterparts, highlighting the need for strategies to improve follow-up, social support, and outcomes in the current TB programme. Additional research should focus on predictors for unfavorable outcomes among the elderly TB group and ways to address them, with a call for adequate social support from both the health system and families.

National treatment outcome and predictors of death and treatment failure in multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in Ethiopia: a 10-year retrospective cohort study

Habteyes Tola et al.

Summary: In the past 10 years, the treatment success rate of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in Ethiopia has been consistently favorable, but the proportion of patients who died remains considerable, primarily attributed to older age, HIV infection, and anaemia. Prospective cohort studies are needed to further explore potentially modifiable predictors of treatment failure.

Tuberculosis treatment outcome and associated factors among tuberculosis patients at Wolayta Sodo Teaching and Referral Hospital, Southern Ethiopia: A retrospective study

Malese Yeshambaw Teferi et al.

Summary: The study assessed TB treatment outcomes and associated factors among TB patients in Wolayta Sodo Teaching and Referral Hospital, Southern Ethiopia. The overall treatment success rate was 82.5% with a high proportion of patients lost to follow-up. HIV co-infected TB patients had a slightly lower treatment success rate compared to the overall rate.
