Identification of male-specific SNP markers and development of rapid PCR-based genetic sex identification method in channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus)

Nairong Pan et al.

Summary: This study identified 13 male-specific SNPs in the coding region of the zbtb38 gene of channel catfish through sex-related QTL mapping and targeted NGS technique. It is speculated that zbtb38 gene on the Y chromosome plays a crucial role in testicular differentiation and is an important candidate gene for sex determination in channel catfish. Male-specific primers were designed based on male-specific nucleotides to establish a rapid and effective method for genetic sex identification in channel catfish.

Dmrt2 promotes transition of endochondral bone formation by linking Sox9 and Runx2

Koichiro Ono et al.

Summary: Endochondral bone formation relies on the transcription factor Dmrt2, which is induced by Sox9 to promote chondrocyte hypertrophy and interact with Runx2 to regulate gene expression. Lack of Dmrt2 may disrupt the sequential chondrocyte differentiation in endochondral bone formation.

lncRNA DMRT2-AS acts as a transcriptional regulator of dmrt2 involving in sex differentiation in the Chinese tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis)

Bo Feng et al.

Summary: In this study, a long non-coding RNA DMRT2-AS was cloned and characterized from the gonads of Chinese tongue sole, showing its importance in male gonadal development by promoting the expression of dmrt2 at the transcriptional level. This highlights the regulatory role of DMRT2-AS in gonadal differentiation, particularly in male individuals.

Characterization of dmrts and their potential role in gonadal development of mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi)

Chong Han et al.

Summary: The Dmrt gene family, including dmrt1, dmrt2, and dmrt3, plays a critical role in sex determination and differentiation in animals. This study demonstrated that dmrt1 is mainly expressed in the testis and is crucial for testis differentiation/development, while dmrt2 is critical in ovary development. The expression patterns and functions of these genes provide important insights into sex differentiation in the mandarin fish.

SEX DETERMINATION, GONADAL SEX DIFFERENTIATION, AND PLASTICITY IN VERTEBRATE SPECIES

Yoshitaka Nagahama et al.

Summary: A diverse array of sex determination mechanisms exist among vertebrates, with the major milestone being the discovery of the SRY gene in mammals. Significant progress has been made in understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in vertebrate sex determination and gonadal sex differentiation over the past three decades. The discovery of a large diversity of sex determination genes suggests the complexity and evolutionary implications of this biological event.
