Tuning the reaction path of CO2 electroreduction reaction on indium single-atom catalyst: Insights into the active sites

Jiawei Zhang et al.

Summary: Modulating the local coordination structure of metal single-atom catalysts can effectively tune the catalytic activity and reaction pathway, leading to controllable product selectivity. In this study, the product selectivity of electrochemical CO2 reduction on single-atom indium catalysts was successfully switched from formate to CO by varying the carbon and nitrogen occupations in the first coordination sphere. The shift in active sites from the indium center to adjacent carbon atoms was identified as the mechanism behind the selectivity switch. These findings suggest a new implication for the active sites in metal single-atom catalysts.

Construction of single-atom copper sites with low coordination number for efficient CO2 electroreduction to CH4

Shaomin Wei et al.

Summary: In this study, a single-atom copper catalyst based on MOF was successfully synthesized using a plasma-activated strategy, leading to increased oxygen vacancies and catalytically active copper sites. The hierarchically porous structure created by plasma treatment enhanced the adsorption of reactant molecules, resulting in improved activity for CO2 electroreduction to CH4. This strategy demonstrates the feasibility of preparing single-atom catalysts under mild conditions.

Cu-based bimetallic electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction

Yufei Jia et al.

Summary: The extensive consumption of fossil fuels has led to a rapid increase in atmospheric CO2 levels, necessitating the development of a clean and efficient technology for CO2 conversion. Copper, as the only metal capable of catalyzing the conversion of CO2 to multi-carbon products, has attracted considerable attention. However, single copper-based catalysts suffer from slow reaction kinetics, low product selectivity, and poor stability, which can be addressed by introducing a second metal. This review summarizes recent progress in Cu-based bimetallic electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction, discussing the effects of composition and structure on their activity and selectivity, and outlining the challenges and prospects in this field.

Nitrogen Vacancy Induced Coordinative Reconstruction of Single-Atom Ni Catalyst for Efficient Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Chen Jia et al.

Summary: In this study, a new plasma-assisted and nitrogen vacancy induced coordinative reconstruction strategy was utilized to optimize the structure of transition metal nitrogen carbon based single-atom catalysts, leading to improved efficiency and selectivity in CO2 electroreduction to CO. The reconstruction process enhanced the kinetics of CO2-to-CO conversion, resulting in significantly increased CO selectivity and productivity with a high CO Faradaic efficiency and large CO current density. X-ray adsorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations show that the defective local nitrogen environment created by the reconstruction strategy reduces the constraint on central nickel atoms, facilitating the adsorption and activation of CO2 molecules and lowering the energy barrier for CO2 reduction.

Summary: Alloying is a common strategy for modulating electronic structures of catalyst materials, with intermetallic alloys providing a unique platform for studying structure-performance correlations. In this study, intermetallic Pd3Bi nanocrystals were successfully prepared via a facile solvothermal method, demonstrating high selectivity and stability in electrochemical CO2 reduction. The phase-dependence of performance was attributed to the crystallographic ordering within intermetallic alloys, suppressing CO poisoning and enhancing *OCHO adsorption.

Heterogeneous nanocomposites consisting of Pt3Co alloy particles and CoP2 nanorods towards high-efficiency methanol electro-oxidation

Niuwa Yang et al.

Summary: This study reports a synthetic strategy to prepare heterogeneous Pt3Co-CoP2 nanocomposites with high performance for methanol electro-oxidation. The nanocomposites exhibit strong electronic coupling between Pt3Co and CoP2 domains, resulting in decreased electron density around Pt atoms, which is beneficial for reducing the adsorption of poisoning CO-like intermediates on catalyst surfaces. The as-prepared Pt3Co-CoP2 nanocomposites show superior mass-based activity compared to commercial Pt/C catalyst and homemade Pt3Co alloy nanoparticles in both acidic and alkaline media.
