Observation of fluctuation-mediated picosecond nucleation of a topological phase

Felix Buettner et al.

Summary: Time-resolved X-ray scattering was used to demonstrate the ultrafast 300 ps topological phase transition to a skyrmionic phase, mediated by the formation of a transient topological fluctuation state. The emergence of an extended topological phase containing many magnetic skyrmions was observed within picoseconds, with the nucleation process mediated by the transient topological fluctuation state induced by a time-reversal symmetry-breaking perpendicular magnetic field.

Ultrafast nanoimaging of the order parameter in a structural phase transition

Thomas Danz et al.

Summary: This research introduces ultrafast dark-field electron microscopy to investigate the order parameter across a structural phase transition, using ultrashort laser pulses to locally excite a thin film and imaging the transient state of the specimen with ultrashort electron pulses. The study tracks the evolution of charge-density wave domains in the material with femtosecond temporal and 5-nanometer spatial resolution, revealing relaxation pathways and domain wall dynamics. The selective contrast enhancement in this study will inspire future advancements in beam-shaping technology for ultrafast transmission electron microscopy.

Engineering crystal structures with light

Ankit S. Disa et al.

Summary: The crystal structure of a material largely determines its electronic, optical, and mechanical properties. Recent exploration of quantum materials has focused on controlling crystal structures through materials synthesis, strain engineering, or heterostructuring. The emerging field of nonlinear phononics uses resonant laser pulses to drive vibrational modes in a crystal, allowing for rational design of crystal structure and symmetry with light to manipulate functional properties.

Colloquium: Nonthermal pathways to ultrafast control in quantum materials

Alberto de la Torre et al.

Summary: Recent progress in utilizing ultrafast light-matter interaction to control the macroscopic properties of quantum materials is reviewed, focusing on photoinduced phenomena that are nonthermal in nature. These phenomena involve transient modifications to the free energy landscape, redistribution of quasiparticle populations, modification of coupling strengths, resonant driving of the crystal lattice, and coherent dressing of a material's quantum states by the light field. Discussing recently discovered effects leveraging these mechanisms and presenting a road map for utilizing nonthermal pathways to create new functionalities.

Strain wave pathway to semiconductor-to-metal transition revealed by time-resolved X-ray powder diffraction

C. Mariette et al.

Summary: Researchers have used femtosecond powder X-ray diffraction to study the transition from semiconductor to metal in Ti3O5 nanocrystals, finding that strain waves and electronic precursor phenomena determine the transformation pathway. The study demonstrates that in nanocrystals, picosecond switching occurs simultaneously with the propagating acoustic wavefront.

Imaging Nanometer Phonon Softening at Crystal Surface Steps with 4D Ultrafast Electron Microscopy

Yichao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the direct observation of ultrafast atomic-to-nanoscale lattice dynamics at individual surface steps using femtosecond 4D ultrafast electron microscopy, revealing nanometer-variant softening of photoexcited phonons. The softening effect is attributed to anisotropic bond dilation and photoinduced incoherent atomic displacements, extending laterally tens of nanometers from the atomic-scale discontinuity. The high spatiotemporal resolutions achieved in this study provide new insights into atomic-scale structure-function relationships of highly defect-sensitive, functional materials.

Ultrafast strain propagation and acoustic resonances in nanoscale bilayer systems

N. Bach et al.

Summary: Ultrafast structural probing has improved our understanding of the coupling between atomic motion and electronic/phononic degrees-of-freedom in quasi-bulk materials. By studying the low-frequency acoustic phonon spectrum in metal/semiconductor bilayer systems, it is found that elastic mismatch between materials significantly affects acoustic resonance frequencies.
