Co13O8-metalloxocubes: a new class of perovskite-like neutral clusters with cubic aromaticity

Lijun Geng et al.

Summary: Utilizing a newly developed deep-ultraviolet laser ionization mass spectrometry technique, reactions between neutral cobalt clusters and oxygen were observed, leading to the discovery of a very stable cluster species Co13O8 dominating the mass distribution in the presence of a large flow rate of oxygen gas. The global-minimum structural search revealed a unique cubic structure and distinctive stability of the neutral Co13O8 cluster, forming a new class of metal oxides termed as 'metalloxo cubes'. Thermodynamics and kinetics calculations illustrated the structural evolution from icosahedral Co-13 to metalloxocube Co13O8 with decreased energy, enhanced stability, and aromaticity. This class of neutral oxygen-passivated metal clusters may be ideal candidates for genetic materials due to the stability resulting from the cubic aromaticity of the building blocks.

High-throughput identification of one-dimensional atomic wires and first principles calculations of their electronic states*

Feng Lu et al.

Summary: Low dimensional materials, particularly one-dimensional atomic wires exfoliated from van der Waals bulks, show promise for next-generation nanometer device applications due to their unique properties. A computational database of 367 one-dimensional atomic wires has been established, with thermodynamically stable unary and binary systems showing potential for exfoliation and practical applications, offering a platform for exploring exotic quantum states and device development. The database is openly accessible for further research and utilization.

High-throughput bandstructure simulations of van der Waals hetero-bilayers formed by 1T and 2H monolayers

Rui Dong et al.

Summary: Vertically stacked van der Waals heterostructures made of two-dimensional compounds provide a vast playground for nano-engineered materials, but high-throughput electronic structure theory is not practical for their complex calculation. A method has been developed in this work to compute the band structure of van der Waals heterostructures efficiently, based on density functional theory and the assumption of limited inter-layer electronic interaction. This analysis allows for the identification and categorization of a wide range of van der Waals bilayer heterostructures with various band gaps and band line-ups.

Summary: Predictive modeling of two-dimensional (2D) materials lies at the intersection of two rapidly growing interests: the exploration of 2D materials in experimental labs and the development of theoretical-computational models for materials. This field encompasses modeling methods, philosophical assessments, and practical examples related to the structures, properties, functionalities, and synthetic routes of 2D materials.
