Fatal Food Anaphylaxis: Distinguishing Fact From Fiction

Aikaterini Anagnostou et al.

Summary: Although data supporting the perception of increasing prevalence of food allergy is limited, certain food triggers, such as peanut and tree nuts, are more frequently associated with fatal anaphylaxis. Fatal food-induced anaphylaxis is most likely to occur during adolescence and young adulthood. Treatment with intramuscular epinephrine is recommended, but fatalities can still occur. It is important for clinicians to help patients understand the low but real risk of fatal reactions and provide appropriate education and risk reduction measures.

Reproducibility of Symptom Sequences Across Episodes of Recurrent Anaphylaxis

Calum Slapnicar et al.

Summary: Individual patients experience reproducibly stereotypic anaphylactic reactions over time, which are unique to a given patient, irrespective of the cause of anaphylaxis. However, symptom sequences during anaphylaxis are not reproducible between individuals.

Community Use of Epinephrine for the Treatment of Anaphylaxis: A Review and Meta-Analysis

Laura May Miles et al.

Summary: The study found that prompt use of epinephrine in cases of anaphylaxis remains suboptimal globally. Major barriers include low prescription rates of epinephrine autoinjectors and lack of stock epinephrine in schools. Various studies have shown effective methods to promote adequate and timely use of epinephrine.

The Revenge of Unintended Consequences of Anaphylaxis-Risk Overdiagnosis: How Far We Have Come and How Far We Have to Go

Elissa M. Abrams et al.

Summary: Overdiagnosis of anaphylaxis risk is an underappreciated aspect of anaphylaxis prevention, but recent progress has been made to avoid unintended consequences. Recent paradigm shifts in anaphylaxis risk management include approaches like peanut allergy prevention without screening and deferring corticosteroids.
