A physically-supported data-driven proxy modeling based on machine learning classification methods: Application to water front movement prediction

Yousof Haghshenas et al.

Summary: This study introduces a smart proxy model based on grid-block level for water front prediction, combining the advantages of physics-based and Data-Driven proxy models. The model formulates the problem using physical principles and uses machine learning classification models to predict water front movement. Results show that the CSPMG matches the reservoir simulator results and outperforms regression models for longer predictions.

Dynamics of dissolution trapping in geological carbon storage

Sahar Bakhshian

Summary: A quantitative study was conducted on the dynamics of dissolution trapping of supercritical CO2 (scCO2) in a brine-filled porous medium, revealing that CO2 dissolution in brine is not instantaneous due to structural heterogeneity. The rate of CO2 dissolution is influenced by factors such as injection rate and surface wettability, with higher injection rates and more wetting surfaces leading to increased dissolution.

Towards a predictor for CO2 plume migration using deep neural networks

Gege Wen et al.

Summary: This paper demonstrates a deep neural network approach for predicting CO2 plume migration from an injection well in heterogeneous formations with high computational efficiency. The neural network model can handle highly heterogeneous permeability fields and learn the consequences of the interplay of gravity, viscous, and capillary forces. It has excellent ability to generalize within the training data ranges and to a limited extent, the ability to extrapolate beyond the training data ranges.

Summary: The study reveals that corner-flow events promote a compact displacement pattern, leading to maximum recovery efficiency under strong imbibition; the saturation of invading fluid results in the transition of displacement patterns from fingering to stable flow.
