Identification of loci associated with pathological outcomes in Holstein cattle infected with Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis using whole-genome sequence data

Maria Canive et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic associations between host genetic and pathology in bovine paratuberculosis. It identified specific SNPs associated with multifocal and diffuse lesions, as well as enrichment of candidate genes involved in cholesterol metabolism and keratinization pathways. The findings suggest that MAP-associated pathological outcomes may be partially genetically determined, indicative of distinct host responses.

Bovine Intelectin 2 Expression as a Biomarker of Paratuberculosis Disease Progression

Cristina Blanco Vazquez et al.

Summary: ITLN2, as a biomarker, can be used to assess disease progression in MAP infection and play an important role in chronic granulomatous enteritis. The quantity of ITLN2 in ICV samples varies significantly among different histopathological types, with the highest expression in the focal type. These results validate the potential application value of ITLN2 in disease progression.

Identification of loci associated with susceptibility to Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis infection in Holstein cattle using combinations of diagnostic tests and imputed whole-genome sequence data

Maria Canive et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify quantitative trait loci associated with MAP infection in Spanish Holstein cows using diagnostic tests and whole-genome sequence data. GWAS identified SNPs associated with susceptibility to bovine PTB, while QTLs on several Bos taurus autosomes were linked to immune-modulating genes.

The Paratuberculosis Paradigm Examined: A Review of Host Genetic Resistance and Innate Immune Fitness in Mycobacterium avium subsp. Paratuberculosis Infection

Amanda Kravitz et al.

Summary: Paratuberculosis, or Johne's Disease, is a chronic enteritis mainly affecting ruminants caused by MAP, leading to economic losses and potential zoonotic risk. The lack of effective treatments and vaccines complicates disease control strategies, while host genetics play a role in resistance and susceptibility. Candidate genes identified in studies overlap with those found in CD and tuberculosis.

Johne's Disease in Dairy Cattle: An Immunogenetic Perspective

Sanjay Mallikarjunappa et al.

Summary: Johne's disease, also known as paratuberculosis, is a significant production-limiting disease in the global cattle industry with potential public health concerns. Recent technological advances have greatly enhanced understanding of the immunological, genetic, and pathogen factors influencing this disease, leading to efforts to control JD through identification of genetic markers, quantitative trait loci, and the potential use of gene editing technologies.
