Escape from X Chromosome Inactivation and the Female Predominance in Autoimmune Diseases

Ali Youness et al.

Summary: Women are more susceptible to autoimmune diseases, not only due to sex hormones, but also because of X-linked genetic factors. X chromosome inactivation in female mammals results in cellular mosaicism and escape of some X-linked genes from inactivation, impacting the functional plasticity of female immune cells.

Sex Differences in Immunity: Implications for the Development of Novel Vaccines Against Emerging Pathogens

Anahita Fathi et al.

Summary: Vaccines are crucial in saving lives, but responses to vaccination may vary based on factors like gender and age. As COVID-19 vaccines are being developed, the gender-specific differences in vaccine response need more attention and research.

Sex Differences in Immunity to Viral Infections

Henning Jacobsen et al.

Summary: The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the sex-specific differences in immunity and outcomes following SARS-CoV-2 infection, with evidence suggesting a male bias in disease severity mediated by differential immune responses. While males are more susceptible to most viral infections, females possess immunological features that make them vulnerable to distinct immune-related disease outcomes. Sex chromosome complement, related genes, and sex steroids all play crucial roles in mediating these sex differences in immunity to viral infections.

Sex Differences in Primary HIV Infection: Revisiting the Role of TLR7-Driven Type 1 IFN Production by Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cells in Women

Jean-Charles Guery

Summary: Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) in women produce higher levels of TLR7-driven type I interferon during HIV-1 infection, leading to stronger antiviral responses compared to men. However, excessive TLR7 response in women has been found to have a deleterious impact on acute viremia. This is attributed to specific genetic variations in TLR7 which affect protein synthesis and effector function, resulting in lower viral load during primary HIV-1 infection in females.

Sexual Dimorphism and Gender in Infectious Diseases

Laetitia Gay et al.

Summary: Sexual dimorphism plays a significant role in susceptibility to infectious diseases, with differences in immune responses, hormonal influence, and genetic factors impacting disease outcomes differently in males and females. Considering gender as a critical variable in infectious diseases is essential for developing personalized therapeutic strategies.

Global Epidemiology of HIV/AIDS: A Resurgence in North America and Europe

Romona D. Govender et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess global trends in HIV/AIDS and found that while many countries have decreasing incidence rates, some countries like Russia, Ukraine, Portugal, Brazil, Spain and the United States have been experiencing rising rates of new cases since 2010. Globally, there are about 5000 new infections daily, with approximately 500 of them being children. Mortality rates are decreasing globally while prevalence continues to rise.

How elite controllers and posttreatment controllers inform our search for an HIV-1 cure

Jonathan Z. Li et al.

Summary: A small percentage of HIV-1 patients, known as elite controllers (ECs) or posttreatment controllers (PTCs), can control viral replication without antiretroviral therapy. Although these patients may serve as a model for a functional cure for HIV-1, the mechanisms responsible for viral control remain unclear. Research on controllers provides important insights for HIV cure research.
