Neutrophil Extracellular Traps Exacerbate Ischemic Brain Damage

Congqin Li et al.

Summary: Most acute strokes are ischemic, leading to subsequent neuroinflammation that promotes further damage but also serves a beneficial role. Neutrophils play a key role after ischemic stroke, with increasing evidence showing their involvement in the pathogenic process through the release of NETs.

Neuroprotective Effect of Fractalkine on Radiation-induced Brain Injury Through Promoting the M2 Polarization of Microglia

Jiaojiao Wang et al.

Summary: This study revealed that Fractalkine (FKN) can attenuate Radiation-induced brain injury (RIBI) by promoting microglia polarization towards M2 phenotype through binding to CX3CR1, which could potentially be a promising strategy for the treatment of RIBI.

Characterization of CB2 Receptor Expression in Peripheral Blood Monocytes of Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients

Rosaria Greco et al.

Summary: Both preclinical and clinical evidence support the involvement of the endocannabinoid system in the pathobiology of cerebral ischemia. The increased expression of CB2 receptors in monocytes after ischemic stroke, along with the positive correlation between CB2+/CD16+ events and NIHSS score, suggests that CB2 receptor agonists may have therapeutic potential for ischemic stroke patients.

Summary: Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease with high mortality worldwide. MiR-27a and miR-329 expression levels, as well as serum levels of hs-CRP, ox-LDL, and MDA, were significantly higher in CAD patients compared to controls, while ABCA1 and ABCG1 gene expression was lower. Levels of hs-CRP, ox-LDL, and miR-27a were inversely related to ABCA1 and ABCG1 expression in all subjects.

Role of TLR4 in Neutrophil Dynamics and Functions: Contribution to Stroke Pathophysiology

Violeta Duran-Laforet et al.

Summary: The absence of TLR4 in neutrophils leads to smaller infarct volumes after ischemic stroke. TLR4-lacking neutrophils remain in a steady youth status and show higher phagocytic activity, preferential engulfment by microglia, and reduced production of ROS in the initial stages of inflammation post-stroke. These findings suggest that targeting TLR4 in specific cell types, especially neutrophils, may be a potential strategy for neuroprotection.

Neuroprotective effects and mechanisms of ischemic/hypoxic preconditioning on neurological diseases

Jia Liu et al.

Summary: The brain, as the organ with the highest oxygen demand, has poor tolerance to ischemia and hypoxia. Ischemic/hypoxic preconditioning has been studied as an effective strategy to improve tolerance and is considered significant in treating CNS diseases. It involves multiple protective mechanisms and is a research frontier in neurotherapy, with challenges in translating from basic research to clinical application.

Quantitative and Correlational Analysis of Brain and Spleen Immune Cellular Responses Following Cerebral Ischemia

Qingkun Liu et al.

Summary: The article investigates the cellular dynamics of immune responses in the central nervous system and periphery post stroke, highlighting correlations between different cell types in the brain and spleen following stroke. Findings suggest a synergistic effect between infiltrated macrophages and neutrophils in the ischemic hemisphere, as well as a positive correlation between neutrophils and T cells. Furthermore, the correlation between neurological deficits and immune cells indicates that microglia and splenic adaptive immune cells are protective, while infiltrating peripheral myeloid cells exacerbate stroke outcomes. Understanding these immune responses is crucial for predicting stroke outcomes and identifying therapeutic targets.

Prognostic Value of Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio in Stroke: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Wenxia Li et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis found that elevated neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is significantly associated with poor prognosis of stroke patients, with a 1.1- to 1.3-fold increased risk of poor outcomes in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and acute hemorrhagic stroke (AHS) patients. Additionally, elevated NLR is also linked to an increased incidence of hemorrhagic transformation (HT) in AIS patients. This suggests NLR could serve as a potential prognostic biomarker for guiding clinical decision making in stroke patients.

MicroRNA-329-3p alleviates high glucose-induced endothelial cell injury via inhibition of the TLR4/TRAF6/NF-kappa B signaling pathway

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the expression of miR-329-3p in patients with T2DM and its effect on vascular endothelial cell function under high-glucose conditions. Results showed reduced expression of miR-329-3p in T2DM patients' plasma and high-glucose-treated HUVECs. Additionally, miR-329-3p protected HUVECs from high glucose-induced damage by inhibiting the TLR4/TRAF6/NF-kappa B signaling pathway.
