Recent advances in the synthesis of luminescent tetra-coordinated boron compounds

Anna Chandrasekar Murali et al.

Summary: Tetra-coordinated boron compounds offer a variety of luminescent materials. Different chelation around the boron center has been explored to tune their electronic and photophysical properties, resulting in fascinating properties such as aggregation induced emission, mechanochromism and tunable emission. Some of these molecules have shown applications in optoelectronic devices and probes.

Aggregation-Induced Emission-Active Carbazolyl-Modified Benzo[4,5]thiazolo[3,2-c]oxadiazaborinines as Mechanochromic Fluorescent Materials

Mykhaylo A. Potopnyk et al.

Summary: Two highly emissive donor-acceptor type organoboron dyes, based on carbazole donor and benzothiazole-fused oxadiazaborinine acceptor, exhibit high positive solvatofluorochromism and aggregation-induced emission properties, demonstrating efficient solid-state emission and significant mechanofluorochromic properties. Additionally, a compound with unsubstituted carbazole unit shows two distinct crystalline polymorphs with different photophysical properties.

BOSHPY Fluorophores: BODIPY Analogues with Single Atom Controlled Aggregation

Briana R. Schrage et al.

Summary: The reaction of diiminoisoindoline and iminoxoisoindoline with aminoazoles produces bidentate chelates that can be considered as semihemiporphyrazine, which react with BF3 to form fluorescent compounds similar to BODIPY dyes. These difluoroboron semihemiporphyrazines (BOSHPYs) aggregate into H or J aggregates, with the imine terminated compounds retaining their fluorescent properties upon aggregation.

Color-tunable tetracoordinated organoboron complexes exhibiting aggregation-induced emission for the efficient turn-on detection of fluoride ions

Yanyu Qi et al.

Summary: Three color-tunable tetracoordinated organoboron complexes with aggregation-induced emission characteristics were designed and synthesized, showing significantly affected photophysical properties by the electron-donating ability of donors. These stable compounds were utilized as fluorescent probes for fluoride ions in organic solvent, demonstrating good selectivity and reversibility. Crystallography and fluorescence sensing titration experiments revealed the sensing mechanism involves the formation of a novel difluoroboron push-pull system by introducing F-.
