Higher Quality Colonoscopy: Worth the Wait?

Impact of Community Referral on Colonoscopy Quality Metrics in a Veterans Affairs Medical Center

Summary: The study examines the impact and quality of colonoscopy metrics in veterans receiving procedures within the Department of Veterans' Affairs (VA) vs community settings. The results show that colonoscopies performed in the community have lower adenoma detection rate, advanced adenoma detection rate, and compliance with surveillance guidelines compared to VA-based colonoscopies. Time to colonoscopy was shorter in the community, but the quality of care may be compromised. Further studies are needed to ensure the quality of colonoscopy for veterans.
