The socio-ecological system of the pre-Sahara zone of Morocco: a conceptual framework to analyse the impact of drought and desertification

Ahmed Karmaoui et al.

Summary: The study reveals that drought and desertification have significant impacts on the pre-Sahara region of Morocco, affecting water resources and crop yields. Respondents generally consider ensuring water safety as the best option for adapting to drought in the area, while most interviewees believe that temperature and wind have a very high impact on desertification.

The Readiness Index for Climate Change Adaptation in Africa: The Role of Climate and Adaptive Capacity Proxies

Terence Epule Epule et al.

Summary: This study assesses Africa's readiness for climate change adaptation through a newly developed ClimAdaptCap Index. Results show that North and Southern Africa are the most ready for adaptation, while West Africa is the least ready. There is a positive correlation between readiness and literacy rates, and an inverse correlation with poverty rates. The index effectively simulates readiness in Africa and complements existing frameworks for adaptation preparedness.

Vulnerability of maize, millet, and rice yields to growing season precipitation and socio-economic proxies in Cameroon

Terence Epule Epule et al.

Summary: This study in Cameroon assesses the vulnerability of maize, millet, and rice to growing season precipitation at both national and sub-national scales. The results show that millet has the lowest vulnerability index nationally, while rice has the highest. An inverse relationship between vulnerability and adaptive capacity is observed, with rice having the lowest adaptive capacity and the highest vulnerability index.

Cereal Yield Forecasting with Satellite Drought-Based Indices, Weather Data and Regional Climate Indices Using Machine Learning in Morocco

El houssaine Bouras et al.

Summary: This study develops an early forecasting model of cereal yields using machine learning algorithms and remote sensing drought indices, climate, and weather variables. Combining satellite drought indices with climate and weather data can improve prediction performance, with satellite drought indices being crucial for predicting yields close to harvest, while weather data and climate indices are key for earlier predictions.
