Extensive allele mining discovers novel genetic diversity in the loci controlling frost tolerance in barley

Davide Guerra et al.

Summary: Exome sequencing-based allele mining in barley reveals that HvCBF14, rather than CNV at the Fr-H2 locus, is the main gene responsible for frost tolerance. Analysis of SNPs and read counts identified new deletions linked to reduced vernalization requirement, and highlighted the importance of HvCBF14 in controlling frost tolerance. This study provides a powerful resource for discovering novel alleles at relevant genes in barley.

Contribution of functional genomics to identify the genetic basis of water-deficit tolerance in barley and the related molecular mechanisms

Mohamed Amine Marok et al.

Summary: Drought is an increasing environmental constraint on agricultural production, and genetic improvement for drought tolerance in crops, such as barley, is a critical challenge for breeders. Recent advances in functional genomics have identified candidate genes in barley germplasm collections that play roles in drought tolerance mechanisms. The use of sequencing technology, mass spectrometry, and bioinformatics tools allows for the identification of promising loci for breeders to improve barley responses to drought.

Opportunities for Improving Waterlogging Tolerance in Cereal Crops-Physiological Traits and Genetic Mechanisms

Cen Tong et al.

Summary: Waterlogging occurs when soil is saturated with water, leading to anaerobic conditions in the root zone of plants. Climate change is increasing the frequency of waterlogging events, resulting in considerable crop losses. Plants respond to waterlogging stress by adventitious root growth, aerenchyma formation, energy metabolism, and phytohormone signalling, with genotypes differing in their responses.
