Examining flood vulnerability mapping approaches in developing countries: A scoping review

Garikai Martin Membele et al.

Summary: Mapping flood vulnerability is important in addressing climate change, as it helps identify vulnerable populations and understand the reasons behind their vulnerability. In developing countries, mapping is typically integrated and multidisciplinary, mainly conducted at the community or local level using indicator-based multi-criteria analysis approaches and GIS. However, there is limited stakeholder participation and use of indigenous knowledge, and the lack of reliable and updated data affects the validation and usability of the flood vulnerability maps.

A short-term flood prediction based on spatial deep learning network: A case study for Xi County, China

Chen Chen et al.

Summary: Accurate prediction of floods is crucial for minimizing damage. This paper proposes a convolutional LSTM model that combines a convolutional neural network with a long short term memory network to extract spatiotemporal features of hydrological information. Experimental results demonstrate the model's superior performance in flood arrival time and peak discharge prediction.

A comparison of social vulnerability indices specific to flooding in Ecuador: principal component analysis (PCA) and expert knowledge

Agathe Bucherie et al.

Summary: Social vulnerability is an important component in the equation of risk assessment and disaster management. This research compares two methods for creating composite indices and finds that the choice of method affects the assessment of social vulnerability. The study also emphasizes the importance of using historical flood impact data to evaluate the contribution of each variable in social vulnerability.

Recent retreat and flood dominant areas along the muddy Mahin coastline of Ilaje, Nigeria

Samuel Daramola et al.

Summary: This study aims to understand the recent changes and potential future threats along the Mahin mud coastline in Nigeria. Using satellite images and GIS technology, the study evaluates the retreat rates and delineates flooded coastal areas under different sea level rise scenarios. The results show that areas that were previously accreting have started to retreat, while other areas continue to experience intensified retreat. Coastal flooding may soon extend several kilometers inland, requiring appropriate coastal protection plans.

A systematic review of the flood vulnerability using geographic information system

Shiau Wei Chan et al.

Summary: The world has been faced with numerous disasters, but flood impacts have gained significant importance and attention due to their adverse effects. Flood vulnerability assessment is essential for better understanding flood hazard management. Geographic information systems play a crucial role in tracking and predicting disaster trends and mitigating risks and damages. This study reviews methodologies used to measure floods and their vulnerabilities, highlighting the importance of integrating high-resolution data with a multidimensional vulnerability methodology.

Investigating major causes of extreme floods using global datasets: A case of Nepal, USA & Thailand

N. Shalinda Fernando et al.

Summary: This study used global dataset products to identify the major flood driver in tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions where severe flooding had occurred in the past decade. The results showed that the estimation of PERSIANN-CDR was more accurate than others in the selected study basins. The statistical model demonstrated that both land-use and precipitation contributed significantly to floods in different regions.

Flash flood-induced vulnerability and need assessment of wetlands using remote sensing, GIS, and econometric models

Md Monirul Islam et al.

Summary: This study restricts flash flood vulnerability mapping and needs assessment based on vulnerability classification in haor regions in Bangladesh using satellite remote sensing, GIS, and econometric models. It also assesses vulnerability and coping strategies against flash floods among different groups of respondents using a composite livelihood vulnerability index. The findings show the significant impact of various factors on farmers' attitudes towards coping strategies.

An investigation on the non-stationarity of flood frequency across the UK

Mengzhu Chen et al.

Summary: The study finds that non-stationary models using rainfall-related covariates perform best for the vast majority of stations, indicating that changes in rainfall patterns remain the dominant driver for flooding changes. Additionally, atmospheric circulation patterns such as NAO and the East Atlantic Pattern are closely related to the non-stationarity of flooding at many stations. Moreover, using multiple covariates can provide a better non-stationary model than using a single covariate for the majority of stations (70%).
