Improving Covariance Matrices Derived from Tiny Training Datasets for the Classification of Event-Related Potentials with Linear Discriminant Analysis

Jan Sosulski et al.

Summary: A novel method is proposed in this study to improve the covariance matrix estimation for linear discriminant analysis by decoupling the time component of event-related potential data, which can significantly enhance classification performance. The new method can increase classification performance by up to four percentage points on small training datasets and converges to the performance of standard shrinkage-regularized LDA on large training datasets.

Cid-Fernandez Susana et al.

Summary: This study found that healthy adult participants with high SMCs performed a task slower and showed changes in ERP components associated with response preparation and inhibition processes compared to those with low SMCs. These results were consistent with declines observed in aMCI participants, supporting the concept of the AD continuum regarding SMCs state.

Alzheimer's Disease and Frontotemporal Dementia: A Robust Classification Method of EEG Signals and a Comparison of Validation Methods

Andreas Miltiadous et al.

Summary: Dementia is characterized by progressive loss of cognitive and emotional abilities. Alzheimer's disease (AD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) are two common types. Analysis of EEG signals can provide an accurate biomarker for detecting changes in neuronal and cognitive dynamics associated with dementia. Different machine-learning techniques were compared for classifying processed EEG signals of AD and FTD, with decision trees achieving 78.5% accuracy for AD detection and random forests achieving 86.3% accuracy for FTD detection. Cross-validation methods were also evaluated for performance in this classification problem.
