Fragility based evaluation of different code based assessment approaches for the performance estimation of existing buildings

Cigdem Cirak Karakas et al.

Summary: Seismic performance assessment of existing buildings constructed before modern seismic design codes is crucial for earthquake prone countries. This study investigates different assessment methods recommended by seismic codes and compares fragility curves of low- to mid-rise RC structures. The results show that new buildings have significantly higher strength, stiffness, and deformation capacity compared to old buildings. The TBEC-2018 code provides the most conservative capacity estimations. The study also finds that building age is the most influential parameter affecting the fragilities of existing buildings.
