HED-UNet: Combined Segmentation and Edge Detection for Monitoring the Antarctic Coastline

Konrad Heidler et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new model that combines deep learning methods for segmenting and delineating coastlines. By combining building blocks from different frameworks and using deep supervision and hierarchical attention mechanism, the training effectiveness is improved. The advantages of this approach over traditional methods and other deep learning methods are demonstrated on a challenging dataset of Antarctic coastlines.

Defect detection and quantification in electroluminescence images of solar PV modules using U-net semantic segmentation

Lawrence Pratt et al.

Summary: EL images allow for defect detection in PV modules that are invisible to the naked eye, and modern deep learning techniques can be used to extract useful information from these images. This can improve efficiency and reliability of PV modules by identifying process issues and reducing the number of faulty modules installed. The study focuses on developing a deep learning method for computer vision independent of equipment, module design, and image quality.

SRN: Side-Output Residual Network for Object Reflection Symmetry Detection and Beyond

Wei Ke et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new benchmark named Sym-PASCAL and proposes an end-to-end deep learning approach for object reflection symmetry detection in natural images. The method leverages a side-output residual network (SRN) to fit errors between symmetry ground truth and side outputs of multiple stages, achieving state-of-the-art performance in challenging real-world image tasks. The SRN is further enhanced to multitask SRN (MT-SRN) for joint symmetry and edge detection without performance loss.

Detection and quantification of damage in bridges using a hybrid algorithm with spatial filters under environmental and operational variability

K. Lakshmi

Summary: A hybrid inverse algorithm based on modal filter is proposed in this study to effectively localize and quantify damage, taking into account environmental variability. By introducing a new damage index, the algorithm is able to accurately detect the time instant of damage, mitigating the effects of environmental and operational variability as well as measurement noise.
