Flow displacement and decreased wall shear stress might be associated with the growth rate of an ascending aortic dilatation

Tarmo Korpela et al.

Summary: In this study, the growth rate of dilatation of the ascending aorta (AA) was evaluated using four-dimensional (4D) flow magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The results showed that flow displacement (FD) and decreased wall shear stress were associated with significant growth of AA dilatation.

Registration-based semi-automatic assessment of aortic diameter growth rate from contrast-enhanced computed tomography outperforms manual quantification

Lydia Dux-Santoy et al.

Summary: This study aimed to quantify the accuracy and inter-observer reproducibility of registration-based and manual assessment of aortic diameters and growth rates. The results showed that the registration-based technique presented low bias and excellent agreement for aortic diameters, and good agreement and much higher inter-observer reproducibility for growth rates compared to manual assessment. The mapping of diameter and growth rate was highly reproducible in the whole thoracic aorta.

Wall shear stress angle is associated with aortic growth in bicuspid aortic valve patients

Savine C. S. Minderhoud et al.

Summary: This study compared the distribution of aortic wall shear stress (WSS) between patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) and healthy controls, and found that the WSS angle was associated with aortic dilation in BAV patients. These findings are important for stratifying BAV patients at risk for aortic dilation.

Ascending aorta curvature and flow displacement are associated with accelerated aortic growth at long-term follow-up: A MRI study in Marfan and thoracic aortic aneurysm patients

M. J. P. van Hout et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of ascending aorta curvature radius and flow displacement on aortic dilation in Marfan and non-syndromic thoracic aortic aneurysm patients during long-term follow-up. The results showed that curvature radius was associated with AA dilation, while flow displacement was related to AA elongation.

Characterization of Ascending Aortic Flow in Patients With Degenerative Aneurysms A 4D Flow Magnetic Resonance Study

Mitch J. F. G. Ramaekers et al.

Summary: The study found that patients with degenerative TAA have decreased flow vorticity and helicity, which may cause disturbances in physiological flow patterns. This altered distribution of wall shear stress could potentially be a contributing factor to vessel wall remodeling and aneurysm formation.

Reproducibility of Aorta Segmentation on 4D Flow MRI in Healthy Volunteers

Joe F. Juffermans et al.

Summary: This study assessed the interexamination, interobserver reproducibility, and intraobserver repeatability of aortic lumen segmentation on 4D flow MRI. The results showed comparable reproducibility and repeatability for each parameter. Excellent reproducibility and repeatability were observed for maximal diameter, while good reproducibility and repeatability were found for curvature radius.
