Iminoboronate-chitooligosaccharides hydrogels with strong antimicrobial activity for biomedical applications

Daniela Ailincai et al.

Summary: The paper discusses the preparation and characterization of hydrogels from chitooligosaccharides crosslinked with 2-formylphenylboronicacid, showing promising properties in terms of biodegradability and antimicrobial activity. The results indicate that hydrogels with lower polymerization degrees exhibit higher biodegradation rates and remarkable antimicrobial properties against various strains. Further in vivo and in vitro biocompatibility tests on experimental mice demonstrate no cytotoxic effects, highlighting the potential applications of these hydrogels in the biomedical field.

Review of shell waste reutilization to promote sustainable shellfish aquaculture

Junxiong Zhan et al.

Summary: Shellfish aquaculture has rapidly expanded, generating over 10 million tons of shell waste annually. The reutilization of shell waste is crucial for environmental protection and promoting the circular economy. Despite its limited economic value, shell waste is often disposed of in landfills, resulting in resource wastage and coastal ecosystem degradation. Recent research has focused on various applications of shell waste in different industries to support large-scale and high value-added utilization.

A Review of Various Sources of Chitin and Chitosan in Nature

Benedict Terkula Iber et al.

Summary: Chitin, originally named from the Greek word chiton, is a polysaccharide composed of acetyl-D-glucosamine monomers. Researchers have extracted chitin from shells of mollusks and cell walls of mushrooms, and efforts have been made to find alternative sources of chitin and chitosan apart from crustaceans.

Symbiotic chitin degradation by a novel anaerobic thermophilic bacterium Hydrogenispora sp. UUS1-1 and the bacterium Tepidanaerobacter sp. GT38

Umbhorn Ungkulpasvich et al.

Summary: A new chitinolytic bacterial community (CBC) with high chitin degradation activity under thermophilic conditions was identified from cow manure compost. Two dominant bacterial genera, Hydrogenispora and Tepidanaerobacter, were found in the CBC. Two isolated strains, UUS1-1 and GT38, were closely related to H. ethanolica and T. acetatoxydans, respectively. A coculture of UUS1-1 and GT38 degraded crystalline chitin faster with lower lactate accumulation, indicating a symbiotic association that enhanced chitin degradation.

Chitin Synthesis and Degradation in Crustaceans: A Genomic View and Application

Xiaojun Zhang et al.

Summary: Chitin synthesis genes typically occur in single or two copies in crustaceans, while chitin degradation genes are all multiple copies. Chitinase genes are significantly expanded in most crustacean genomes. The gene structure and expression pattern of these genes are similar to those of insects, albeit with some specific characteristics.

Enzymatic Synthesis and Characterization of Different Families of Chitooligosaccharides and Their Bioactive Properties

Noa Miguez et al.

Summary: Chitooligosaccharides (COS) are oligomers of D-glucosamine and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine obtained by chitosan or chitin hydrolysis. Enzymatic production is preferred for its mild conditions and efficiency in controlling product composition. Selecting the right enzyme and substrate properties is crucial in directing synthesis towards specific COS types, but scaling processes for specific mixtures is challenging due to low solubility and reaction heterogeneity. Immobilizing enzymes can help overcome these hurdles, and COS have bioactive properties including anti-inflammatory activity.
