Le Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, two microalgal species (Tetradesmus dimorphus and Desmodesmus asymmetricus) were isolated and evaluated for their growth characteristics, nutrients removal efficiency, and biomass composition. The results suggest that these microalgae have the potential to be used for biofuel production and nitrogen/phosphorus removal.

Lipid accumulation and profiling in microalgae Chlorolobion sp. (BIOTECH 4031) and Chlorella sp. (BIOTECH 4026) during nitrogen starvation for biodiesel production

Eldrin Dlr Arguelles et al.

Summary: Lipid-accumulating microalgae, such as Chlorolobion sp. and Chlorella sp., showed increased lipid yield and decreased biomass production under nitrogen-starved culture conditions. The obtained algal biodiesel exhibited high concentrations of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acid methyl esters, making them suitable for biodiesel production. Additionally, the biodiesel properties of the two microalgae met the set specifications of biodiesel standards EN 14214 (European) and ASTM D6751 (American), indicating their potential as raw materials for biodiesel production with superior fuel quality.

Practical strategies to improve harvestable biomass energy yield in microalgal culture: A review

Nima Hajinajaf et al.

Summary: Research on renewable energy is a key challenge in this century due to increasing energy demand and environmental issues associated with fossil fuel consumption. Microalgae have received renewed attention as a potential feedstock for biofuel production, but the high cost of large-scale cultivation systems currently limits economic viability. This study aims to review factors influencing harvestable biomass energy yield in microalgal cultures, particularly those fed with wastewater, and discuss practical strategies to promote low-cost energy production. It is concluded that among the five practical strategies considered, CO2 addition and algal recycling have the greatest impact on enhancing harvestable biomass energy yield.

Effect of salt stress on physiological parameters of microalgae Vischeria punctata strain IPPAS H-242, a superproducer of eicosapentaenoic acid

Maria A. Sinetova et al.

Summary: The eustigmatophycean alga IPPAS H-242 possesses good growth characteristics and high content of the long chain polyunsaturated eicosapentaenoic fatty acid (EPA). Under salt stress, biomass accumulation and cell division were severely inhibited, with cells showing larger size, higher chloroplast volume, more proteins, and higher EPA proportion in lipids. Despite the increase in EPA proportion in total FA, salt stress leads to a decrease in total EPA productivity.

Summary: This study examined the effects of benzyl amino purine (BAP) and gibberellic acid (GA) coupled with nitrogen limitation on Scenedesmus obliquus, and found that these hormones significantly increased biomass and lipid production in the microalgae. This suggests a potential new approach for sustainable biofuel production.
