On the Understandings of Dielectric Constant and Its Impacts on the Photovoltaic Efficiency in Organic Solar Cells

Zihao Fu et al.

Summary: Dielectric constant is a crucial parameter affecting the power conversion efficiency of organic solar cells, and increasing ε of bulk heterojunctions can reduce the impact of charge-transfer states and bimolecular recombination on OSC performance. Current understandings on the impacts of ε on exciton dissociation and voltage losses in OSCs are well-established, with efforts to modify the dielectric properties of OSC materials ongoing through synthetic approaches.

Intrinsic efficiency limits in low-bandgap non-fullerene acceptor organic solar cells

Safakath Karuthedath et al.

Summary: In bulk heterojunction organic solar cells based on low-bandgap non-fullerene acceptors, ultrafast donor-to-acceptor energy transfer precedes hole transfer, and an ionization energy offset of about 0.5 eV is required for efficient charge separation.

A History and Perspective of Non-Fullerene Electron Acceptors for Organic Solar Cells

Ardalan Armin et al.

Summary: Organic solar cells have evolved from relying on fullerenes as acceptors to the emergence of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) which have significantly improved cell efficiencies. However, NFAs challenge the traditional understanding of organic solar cell operation, requiring rethinking of morphology, charge generation, and recombination.

Photophysical pathways in efficient bilayer organic solar cells: The importance of interlayer energy transfer

Song Yi Park et al.

Summary: In planar bilayer heterojunction devices, long-range layer-to-layer energy transfer plays a critical role in enabling efficient organic photovoltaic devices. By isolating this effect and excluding charge transfer effects, it is possible to achieve high efficiencies in bilayer OPVs. The high molecular packing densities, absorption coefficients, and long exciton diffusion lengths contribute to exciton harvesting length scales that match light absorption lengths in planar structures.

Precise fluorination of polymeric donors towards efficient non-fullerene organic solar cells with balanced open circuit voltage, short circuit current and fill factor

Xiaosha Wang et al.

Summary: The performance of polymer donors Qx-8F, Qx-10F, and Qx-12F improves with higher fluorine content, leading to enhanced open circuit voltage, short circuit current density, and fill factor. The device based on Qx-12F with the most fluorine atoms and non-fullerene acceptor Y6 achieves the highest power conversion efficiency, while further improvement is demonstrated with the optimized ternary device based on the Qx-12F:PM6:Y6 blend.
