Pulmonary function and radiological features 4 months after COVID-19: first results from the national prospective observational Swiss COVID-19 lung study

Sabina A. Guler et al.

Summary: The Swiss COVID-19 lung study investigated pulmonary sequelae of COVID-19 in 113 survivors. Severe/critical COVID-19 was associated with significant functional and radiological abnormalities 4 months after infection, potentially due to small-airway and lung parenchymal disease. Systematic follow-up for survivors needs to be evaluated to optimize care for patients recovering from COVID-19.

6-month consequences of COVID-19 in patients discharged from hospital: a cohort study (Publication with Expression of Concern. See vol. 401, pg. 90, 2023)

Chaolin Huang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the long-term health consequences of discharged COVID-19 patients and associated risk factors, particularly disease severity. Patients with more severe illness during hospitalization showed more severe impaired pulmonary diffusion capacities and abnormal chest imaging manifestations, highlighting the need for targeted interventions for long-term recovery.

Patient outcomes after hospitalisation with COVID-19 and implications for follow-up: results from a prospective UK cohort

David T. Arnold et al.

Summary: The study found that most COVID-19 patients still experienced persistent symptoms and limitations in physical ability during the recovery period, but clinically significant abnormalities in chest radiograph, exercise tests, blood tests, and spirometry were less frequent, especially in patients who did not require supplementary oxygen during their acute infection.

Development and validation of the ISARIC 4C Deterioration model for adults hospitalised with COVID-19: a prospective cohort study

Rishi K. Gupta et al.

Summary: A prognostic model was developed and validated to predict the risk of clinical deterioration in acute COVID-19 cases. The model showed consistent discrimination, calibration, and clinical utility across different regions, demonstrating strong potential for informing decision making among hospitalized adults with COVID-19.

Summary: SARS-CoV-2 is responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, causing global healthcare crises. Recovery from COVID-19 may lead to persistent symptoms and long-term complications, prompting the need for multidisciplinary care and follow-up for survivors.

Clinical, radiological and functional outcomes in patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia: a prospective observational study

Pietro Gianella et al.

Summary: A prospective study conducted on 39 patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia showed that 82% had abnormalities on CT scans, 64.1% had impaired lung function tests at three months. Additionally, 79.5% of patients reported poor health perception due to respiratory symptoms, and all 39 patients experienced a decreased overall quality of life.

3-month, 6-month, 9-month, and 12-month respiratory outcomes in patients following COVID-19-related hospitalisation: a prospective study

Xiaojun Wu et al.

Summary: Most patients recovering from severe COVID-19 showed improvement in dyspnoea scores and exercise capacity over time, but a subgroup of patients still exhibited persistent physiological and radiographic changes at 12 months post-discharge. A unified pathway for respiratory follow-up is needed for COVID-19 patients.

One-year follow-up of chest CT findings in patients after SARS-CoV-2 infection

Yanfei Chen et al.

Summary: A 1-year follow-up study on COVID-19 patients after hospital discharge showed gradual recovery on chest CT scans. Residual abnormalities, mainly ground-glass opacity, were associated with older age, smoking, hypertension, lower oxygen saturation, and secondary bacterial infections. These abnormalities were correlated with reduced lung volume parameters.
