Risk factors and mortality associated with multi-drug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infection in adult patients following abdominal surgery

T-L Lin et al.

Summary: This study identifies the risk factors for multi-drug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacterial (GNB) infection in patients following abdominal surgery and determines the predictors associated with death. The findings highlight the importance of factors such as length of pre-ICU stay, surgical re-exploration, and the use of specific antibiotic medications in the acquisition of MDR GNB infection. Additionally, chronic kidney disease, the use of certain antibiotic medications, and inappropriate empirical antimicrobial therapy are identified as predictors for 30-day mortality among patients with MDR GNB infection.

Silver-Containing Thin Films on Transparent Polymer Foils for Antimicrobial Applications

Catalin Vitelaru et al.

Summary: This study introduces a transparent film with silver as the main antimicrobial agent for disinfection on screen protectors. Titanium dioxide and silicon dioxide are used as transparent matrix to embed silver nanoparticles, and the silver amount is controlled through different sputtering techniques. The film's structure and antimicrobial properties are confirmed through surface analysis and spectroscopic testing.

Smart Nanomaterials for Biomedical Applications-A Review

Magdalena Aflori

Summary: Nanomaterials exhibit outstanding physio-chemical functionalities due to their reduced dimensions, but there are limitations in their application in the biomedical field. Therefore, smart nanomaterials are being developed, which undergo large reversible changes in their properties in response to small environmental variations.
