Femtosecond-Laser Assisted Surgery of the Eye: Overview and Impact of the Low-Energy Concept

Catharina Latz et al.

Summary: Femtosecond (fs) laser-assisted surgical techniques in ophthalmology have both established and innovative applications, with a unique ability to cut tissue inside the eye with high precision. Mainly used for corneal and lens surgery, new applications in ophthalmology are emerging. The latest improvement involves high pulse frequency, low-energy concept, enabling cutting with virtually no side effects by enlarging the numerical aperture of focusing optics.

Staging of plasma-wakefield accelerators

Carl A. Lindstrom

Summary: Achieving high energies with a plasma-wakefield accelerator may require multiple stages, but coupling beams from one stage to another is not straightforward due to high divergence and non-negligible energy spreads. In addition to these challenges, other requirements such as space-efficient coupling, beta function matching, dispersion cancellation, and tight synchronization and alignment must be met. Fulfilling all these requirements can reduce the effective gradient of the accelerator significantly.

Femtosecond damage experiments and modeling of broadband mid-infrared dielectric diffraction gratings

Simin Zhang et al.

Summary: MLD gratings suitable for compression of high-energy pulses at 2 micron wavelength for the BAT laser have been developed and tested, with damage thresholds found between 100-230 mJ/cm(2). Damage sites display blister formation at lower fluences and ablation of the grating pillars at higher fluences, as shown in atomic force microscope images.
