Dogus Ozkan et al.

Summary: In this study, multi-layer coatings were deposited on steels using cathodic arc physical vapor deposition. The coatings were characterized using various techniques, and the results showed that CrTiN/CrCN coatings exhibited excellent wear resistance and low friction coefficient under high contact pressures.

Conductive and tribological properties of TiN-Ag composite coatings under grease lubrication

Feihu Lin et al.

Summary: The study found that with a decrease in Ag content in TiN-Ag composite coatings, hardness increased while electrical conductivity decreased. The coating with 10% Ag content showed the best friction-reducing and anti-wear properties, attributed to the moderate content of Ag embedded in the TiN crystal gap enhancing grain bonding force to improve anti-wear and self-lubricating ability. Graphene can be adsorbed on the coating as a solid lubricant.

A synergetic strategy based on laser surface texturing and lubricating grease for improving the tribological and electrical properties of Ag coating under current-carrying friction

Zhengfeng Cao et al.

Summary: The study fabricated a series of Ag coatings with different micro-dimples on copper surfaces using laser surface texturing (LST) and magnetron sputtering and lubricated them with multilayer graphene grease (MGLG). It was found that the textured Ag coatings showed improved tribological and electrical properties under MGLG lubrication compared to non-textured coatings. The synergistic effect of LST and MGLG was believed to contribute to these excellent performances.

Formation of discrete periodic nanolayered coatings through tailoring of nanointerfaces-Toward zero macroscale wear

Mahdi Khadem et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the engineering of nanointerfaces in diamond-like C/Cr nanolayered coatings to improve wear resistance at the macroscale. The coating with subnanometer-thick periodic Cr interlayers showed reduced interfacial defects and record-breaking wear rates. Finite Element analysis and micropatterning strategy were used to further decrease the wear rate, and a dimensionless parameter for predicting wear resistance of carbon-based nanolayered coatings was discovered.

Graphene overcoats for ultra-high storage density magnetic media

N. Dwivedi et al.

Summary: Graphene-based overcoats can overcome the limitations of current technology in hard disk drives, reducing friction and providing better corrosion and wear resistance, while also withstanding HAMR conditions. By utilizing suitable recording technologies such as HAMR and HAMR+bit patterned media, graphene overcoats are expected to enable the development of HDDs with areal densities of 4-10 Tb/in(2).

Shear-Induced Interfacial Structural Conversion Triggers Macroscale Superlubricity: From Black Phosphorus Nanoflakes to Phosphorus Oxide

Yanfei Liu et al.

Summary: A new lubrication system was designed to achieve macroscale superlubricity with a BP coating by depositing BP nanoflakes on the BP coating and using water lubrication. The superlubricity mechanism is mainly attributed to the shear-induced interfacial structural conversion of BP to phosphorus oxide, resulting in the formation of tribofilms with extremely low shear strength on the friction pairs.
