The Effects of Selenium on Bone Health: From Element to Therapeutics

Taeyoung Yang et al.

Summary: This review systematically analyzes the effects of selenium on bone health and highlights the importance of using selenium as a supplement for treating bone disease. Selenium is an important trace element that plays a crucial role in selenoprotein synthesis and skeletal development. However, the intake of an optimum amount of selenium is critical, as both deficiency and toxicity can be hazardous to health. Novel nanobiotechnology may serve as a bridgehead for clinical applications of trace elements and natural products.

Low-Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound Stimulates Osteogenic Differentiation of Periosteal Cells In Vitro

Wai Myo Maung et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) on osteogenic differentiation in murine periosteum-derived cells (PDCs) and found that LIPUS enhanced early osteogenic differentiation through the canonical Smad-signaling pathway, leading to mineral apposition. The results suggest that LIPUS may have the potential to promote osteogenesis in PDCs.

Antibacterial properties and mechanism of selenium nanoparticles synthesized by Providencia sp. DCX

Henglin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study synthesized spherical bio-SeNPs with an average size of 120 nm and demonstrated strong inhibition activity against various model bacteria. The analysis suggested that the antibacterial effects may be achieved through changes in membrane permeability, cell wall disruption, and oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Overexpression of hepatic serum amyloid A1 in mice increases IL-17-producing innate immune cells and decreases bone density

Minjee Choi et al.

Summary: Serum amyloid A (SAA) is a key acute-phase protein that plays a crucial role in initiating and maintaining inflammation by inducing neutrophilia and promoting cytokine secretion. Elevated levels of IL-17 exacerbate inflammatory diseases and contribute to bone loss through increased RANKL secretion. The study demonstrated that chronic inflammation induced by SAA leads to bone loss via IL-17-secreting innate immune cells.
