Thermo-responsive release of rhodamine B in the pore-selective poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) immobilized honeycomb-patterned porous film

Jun Mo Kim et al.

Summary: A new type of thermo-responsive polymer film was fabricated by immobilizing PNIPAAm on a pore-selectively carboxyl group functionalized porous polystyrene film. The film showed smart response to temperature change by releasing rhodamine B above the LCST of PNIPAAm, with a change in pore surface morphology observed by SEM. The temperature-dependent release kinetics of RB exhibited pseudo-first-order kinetics and a transport exponent higher than 1 above the LCST, indicating a temperature-responsive release mechanism related to the change in PNIPAAm morphology.

Fabrication and characterization of pore-selective silver-functionalized honeycomb-patterned porous film and its application for antibacterial activity

Shahkar Falak et al.

Summary: Pore-selective silver-functionalized honeycomb-patterned polystyrene films were fabricated using a modified breath figure method. The antibacterial activity of the functional film was achieved by creating micro-trapping pits through the selective coating of silver in the pores. The film showed good antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Furthermore, this method could potentially be used to selectively functionalize other metals or inorganic materials, providing diverse applications for honeycomb-patterned films.

Yongjiang Li et al.

Summary: Honeycomb films pore-filled with metal (Au, Ag, and Cu) nanoparticles were successfully prepared by combining the breath figure method and an in situ reduction reaction. The morphology of the films was mainly influenced by the polymer molecular structure and metal salt, with the concentration of NaBH4 controlling the selective functionalization of metal nanoparticles. Potential applications of these metal-nanoparticle-functionalized honeycomb films include catalysis, flexible electrodes, SERS, and wettability patterned surfaces.

Ordered Mesoporous Microcapsules from Double Emulsion Confined Block Copolymer Self-Assembly

Joerg G. Werner et al.

Summary: Polymeric microcapsules with mesoporous shells containing uniformly sized nanopores are achieved through self-assembly of amphiphilic block copolymers with a selective porogen in double emulsion drops. The microcapsules can withstand harsh conditions and exhibit pH-responsive permeability to polymeric solutes, showing potential for tunable macromolecular separation and purification as a filtration medium. Further control over shell permeability is achieved through a dual-phase separation method to fabricate microcapsules with hierarchically porous shells.

Summary: The study demonstrates a facile strategy for preparing triggered degradable block copolymer nano/macro-objects via RAFT-mediated polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA), achieving a wide range of morphologies such as micelles, worms, jellyfish, vesicles, spongosomes, cubosomes, and hexosomes. Morphological transitions and phase diagrams were used to understand the formation mechanism and guide the scalable preparation of complex morphologies. The system not only achieved inverse mesophases through acrylate-based monomers with high conversion, but also showed potential for triggered release, templating, and various applications.
