Impact of Zn substitution on Fe(II)-induced ferrihydrite transformation pathways

Jinshu Yan et al.

Summary: Iron oxide phase transformations can be influenced by trace metals such as zinc, affecting the speciation of these metals in soils and sediments. This study investigates the phase transformations of zinc-containing ferrihydrite in the presence of different concentrations of Fe(II). The results show that the presence of zinc accelerates the phase transformations and leads to the formation of different iron oxide phases. The retention of zinc in the newly formed phases suggests that trace metal micronutrients and contaminants may not be mobilized under circumneutral conditions despite the formation of more crystalline iron oxides. These findings have implications for understanding the behavior of trace metals in low temperature environments.

Effect of Sb on precipitation of biogenic minerals during the reduction of Sb-bearing ferrihydrites

Summary: Experimental and analytical results show that antimony (Sb) can affect the precipitation and formation of biogenic minerals in microbiologically mediated redox reactions. Sb(V) can stabilize the structure of green rust, preventing its transformation into more stable phases.
