Stationary shoulder friction stir welding - low heat input joining technique: a review in comparison with conventional FSW and bobbin tool FSW

Devang Sejani et al.

Summary: The invention of friction stir welding revolutionized solid-state materials joining process for lightweight constructions. Stationary shoulder friction stir welding (SSFSW) is an important variant derived from conventional FSW, eliminating key issues and improving material properties. This review critically summarizes the research progress on SSFSW, provides detailed comparisons with other variants, and emphasizes on commercialization and future challenges.

Thermal process and material flow during dissimilar double-sided friction stir spot welding of AZ31/ZK60 magnesium alloys

W. C. Ke et al.

Summary: A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model for double-sided friction stir spot welding (FSSW) between AZ31 and ZK60 magnesium alloys using adjustable pins is proposed. The model combines multiple phase flow theories and FLUENT software to track the metal interface and phase distribution. The calculated flow and thermal responses showed good agreement with experimental data. The study provides insights into the stages and phenomena that occur during the FSSW process.

Assessing the Bonding Interface Characteristics and Mechanical Properties of Bobbin Tool Friction Stir Welded Dissimilar Aluminum Alloy Joints

Quan Wen et al.

Summary: The study focused on the bonding interface characteristics and mechanical properties of bobbin tool friction stir welded dissimilar AA6056 and AA2219 aluminum alloy joints using different welding speeds. It was found that increasing welding speed did not significantly change material mixing in the middle section compared to the bottom section of the bonding interface. Differences in hardness between the Guinier-Preston dissolution and Q-phase precipitation contributed to the rare change in hardness in the heat affected zone (HAZ) at the AA6056 side. Increased hardness in the HAZ at the AA2219 side was attributed to the avoidance of theta '' phase precipitates dissolution.

Avoiding abnormal grain growth in thick 7XXX aluminium alloy friction stir welds during T6 post heat treatments

Matthieu B. Lezaack et al.

Summary: Friction stir welding is crucial in the aerospace industry, but often results in weaker welds compared to the parent material. Post-weld heat treatments, while restoring strength, can lead to significant grain coarsening and undesirable effects on tensile performance. Controlling thermal cycles during welding by using a low thermal conductivity backing plate can help avoid secondary recrystallization and produce welds with strength and ductility similar to the T6 base material.

Suppression of abnormal grain growth in friction-stir welded Al-Cu-Mg alloy by lowering of welding temperature

Ivan S. Zuiko et al.

Summary: Lowering the welding temperature below the particle dissolution threshold was shown to effectively suppress abnormal grain growth during post-weld solution treatment of FSWed 2519 aluminum alloy. This processing strategy can improve thermal stability by preventing precipitation of fine dispersoids in the welded material during subsequent annealing.
