The effect of ultrasonic impact treatment on deformation and fracture of electron beam additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V under uniaxial tension

Alexey Panin et al.

Summary: The results of experimental investigations and molecular dynamics simulation of deformation and fracture of as built wire-feed EBAM Ti-6Al-4V samples and the samples subjected to ultrasonic impact treatment are presented. Dislocation deformation and microstructure changes are observed in the samples under different conditions, and the main deformation mechanisms are identified using molecular dynamics simulation.

THE EFFECT OF ELECTRON-BEAM TREATMENT ON THE DEFORMATION BEHAVIOR OF THE EBAM TI-6AL-4V UNDER SCRATCHING

Artur R. Shugurov et al.

Summary: The effect of continuous electron beam scanning (CEBS) post-treatment on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and scratching behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloy samples produced by electron beam additive manufacturing was studied. It was found that CEBS post-treatment can transform the microstructure of the samples and improve their mechanical characteristics and scratch deformation recovery. A mechanism based on reversible phase transformations was proposed to explain the improved scratch recovery.

Deformation Behavior of Wrought and EBAM Ti-6Al-4V under Scratch Testing

Artur Shugurov et al.

Summary: The study found that despite similar hardness, the scratch depth of EBAM samples under loading was significantly smaller than that of the wrought alloy, possibly due to alpha to alpha' phase transformations.

Effects of Water Cooling on the Microstructure of Electron Beam Additive-Manufactured Ti-6Al-4V

Alexey Panin et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of water cooling on the microstructure and phase composition of EBAM Ti-6Al-4V samples, showing that water cooling results in grain refinement and martensite structure refinement. Additionally, water cooling of the build platform leads to the precipitation of α' martensite platelets within α laths in the EBAM Ti-6Al-4V samples.

Transformations of the Microstructure and Phase Compositions of Titanium Alloys during Ultrasonic Impact Treatment. Part I. Commercially Pure Titanium

Alexey Panin et al.

Summary: The experimental and theoretical studies have revealed the patterns of surface roughening and microstructure refinement in commercial pure titanium during ultrasonic impact treatment. The surface plastic strains proceeded according to the plastic ploughing mechanism along with dislocation sliding, twinning, and microstructure transformations. Molecular dynamics method demonstrated the mechanism of phase transformations and the reversible displacement of atoms leading to changes in coordination numbers during ultrasonic impact treatment, discussing the role of electronic subsystem in strain-induced phase transformations.

Atomistic insights into the deformation mechanism of a CoCrNi medium entropy alloy under nanoindentation

Dongpeng Hua et al.

Summary: Understanding contact-induced behavior in metals is crucial for studying mechanical properties. Nanoindentation studies on CoCrNi MEA revealed unique dislocation nucleation at Cr-rich clusters, contrary to conventional homogeneous nucleation in pure metals. Compositional inhomogeneity and temperature were found to influence defect behavior, with nanotwin formation and phase-transformation promoted at low temperatures.
