Titanium lattice structures manufactured by EBM process: Effect of skin material on bending characteristics

Costanzo Bellini et al.

Summary: Lattice structures have high stiffness and lightweight properties, making them suitable for aerospace applications. This study compared the bending properties of two sandwich structures with lattice cores made of titanium alloy. The all-titanium structure had higher bending stiffness, but the hybrid structure was deemed more performant when weight was equal.

Porosity effect on tensile behavior of Ti-6Al-4V specimens produced by laser engineered net shaping technology

S. M. J. Razavi et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the microstructural characteristics of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V specimens and found that Laser Engineered Net Shaping technology parts are strongly sensitive to variations of building process parameters. Different structure morphologies were observed for different incident energies and cooling rates, impacting material properties. Porous specimens were found to have reduced strength and ductility compared to non-porous specimens.

Interface-Mediated Twinning-Induced Plasticity in a Fine Hexagonal Microstructure Generated by Additive Manufacturing

Pere Barriobero-Vila et al.

Summary: This study discovered the activation of deformation twinning in a fine-grained hcp microstructure by introducing ductile body-centered cubic (bcc) nano-layer interfaces. The fast solidification and cooling conditions of laser-based additive manufacturing, together with intensified intrinsic heat treatment, allowed for the creation of ductile nano-layered structures with the potential to improve the lifespan of hcp damage tolerant materials.

Bending properties of titanium lattice structures produced by electron beam melting process

Costanzo Bellini et al.

Summary: Lattice structures are known for their high mechanical efficiency due to their specific geometry, which provides high strength and stiffness along with lightweight properties. This study examined the flexural properties of a titanium alloy lattice structure produced by electron beam melting, revealing that span length impacts the load-displacement trend. Additionally, skin failure was observed in all test conditions, with indentations in the upper skin for the shortest span length. The presence of dimples on the fracture surface indicated a ductile fracture behavior.
