Vitamin D deficiency and severity of pneumonia in Indonesian children

Vicka Oktaria et al.

Summary: The study found that one in every five children hospitalized with pneumonia in Indonesia was vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D status was not significantly associated with the severity of pneumonia in these children, however, factors such as age younger than 6 months, low birth weight, and poor nutritional status on admission were associated with prolonged hospitalization and risk of hypoxemia.

Factors associated with serious outcomes of pneumonia among children in a birth cohort in South Africa

David M. Le Roux et al.

Summary: This study analyzed pneumonia cases in the Drakenstein Child Health Study and identified factors associated with serious outcomes. Preterm birth, low birth weight, HIV exposure, stunting, and underweight-for-age were associated with prolonged hospitalization, while age < 2 months, preterm birth, or hypoxia were significantly associated with serious outcomes.

Summary: Bangladesh is one of the high burden countries for severe pneumonia, with a high prevalence of hypoxaemia (40%) among hospitalized children. Hypoxaemia is the strongest predictor of mortality and referral, highlighting the urgent need for attention and oxygen security measures.
