New perspectives on utilization of CO2 sequestration technologies in cement-based materials

Baoju Liu et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the application of CO2 sequestration technologies in the construction industry and examines the effects of accelerated carbonation on cement-based materials. The results indicate that CO2 curing can improve the microstructure density and mechanical properties of CBM, facilitating the reuse of recycled materials in CBM.

Enhancement of recycled aggregates and concrete by combined treatment of spraying Ca2+ rich wastewater and flow-through carbonation

Xiaoliang Fang et al.

Summary: The study found that pretreating recycled concrete aggregates with Ca2+ rich wastewater can further enhance the effects of flow-through carbonation, improving the performance of recycled aggregate concrete. Enhancing the recycled concrete aggregates by reducing porosity and increasing the microhardness value of the adhered mortar contributed to the improvement in recycled aggregate concrete. Combining three waste resources (recycled concrete aggregates, wastewater, and waste CO2) is a feasible approach to produce green concrete.

Use of steel slag as sustainable construction materials: A review of accelerated carbonation treatment

Qifeng Song et al.

Summary: Steel slag is a by-product of the steelmaking process characterized by abundant free calcium/magnesium oxide and high heavy metal content. Recent research has shown that accelerated carbonation can improve the properties of steel slag. The challenge lies in understanding the interconnectedness between influencing factors and their contributions to the improvement of steel slag properties.

A comparison of liquid-solid and gas-solid accelerated carbonation for enhancement of recycled concrete aggregate

Songhui Liu et al.

Summary: The liquid-solid carbonation process proved to be more efficient than the 24-hour gas-solid pressurized carbonation method in enhancing the properties of recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) and the resulting recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). The improved performance of RAC was attributed to the formation of additional mono-carbonate (Mc) and C?S?H gel at the interface between the liquid-solid carbonated RCA and the new cement pastes.

CO2 mineral carbonation using industrial solid wastes: A review of recent developments

Weizao Liu et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the development of CO2 mineral carbonation technologies using industrial solid waste as feedstock and identifies energy and cost consumption concerns as limitations for scale-up applications. Further research on process parameter optimization and equipment design is needed to address these limitations and improve the feasibility for industrial applications. Recovery of high-value products during the carbonation process is highlighted as a potential solution to improve the economic viability of the process. Additionally, suggestions for future research directions include evaluating CO2 net emission reduction through life cycle assessment and developing new energy-saving approaches.

Summary: This study found that ambient pressure carbonation can achieve comparable carbon uptake and strength gain as high pressure carbonation at both early and late age, making it more economic and practical for precast products. Nitrogen adsorption/desorption results revealed that ambient pressure performed better than high pressure in reducing the cumulative pore volume and refining the capillary pore size.

Summary: It was found in this study that the casting pressure and water addition determined the initial air voids for BOFS activation. The optimal casting pressure and water to solid ratio could achieve the highest compressive strength and sequestrate considerable amount of CO2. Additionally, adopting optimized parameters simplified the curing process and enabled the development of CO2-activated BOFS-based construction products.

Carbonation curing of cement mortars incorporating carbonated fly ash for performance improvement and CO2 sequestration

Tiefeng Chen et al.

Summary: The study shows that carbonation treatment reduces the content of free CaO in cement mortar, and the synergy of carbonation treatment and carbonation curing can compensate for strength loss caused by FA incorporation, but may delay strength development due to the pozzolanic effect. The CO2-3 introduced by carbonation treatment can affect the resistance of chloride ion penetration, and carbonation curing mitigates this impact by improving the pore structure.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the parametric study of accelerated carbonation of RCAs to store a maximum amount of CO2 and enhance their properties. The results indicate that each parameter affects CO2 storage, with an optimal water content for maximum CO2 uptake depending on the nature and source of RCAs, while accelerated carbonation can reduce the water absorption coefficient of RCAs by up to 67%. Additionally, carbonation decreases porosity by filling the capillary pores.
