Revisiting the ring hoop test in additively manufactured metal tubes

Joao P. M. Pragana et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the mechanical and formability characterization of wire-arc additive manufactured AISI 316-L stainless-steel tubes, using tension and ring hoop tension tests to obtain stress-strain curves and failure onset by fracture for different tube directions. The study revisits the ring hoop test to determine the appropriateness of using different specimen geometries and explores strain loading paths from plane strain to pure shear deformation conditions. Commercial AISI 316-L stainless-steel tubes are included for reference purposes.

Integration of tube end forming in wire arc additive manufacturing: An experimental and numerical investigation

Joao P. M. Pragana et al.

Summary: The integration of tube end forming operations in metal additive manufacturing routes has the potential to fabricate customized features in additively deposited hollow parts. This paper focuses on the advantages of tube expansion with rigid tapered conical mandrels in constructing overhanging flares, showcasing their effectiveness in eliminating support structures and preventing humping. Results show that additively deposited tubes can safely withstand critical ductile damage, allowing for successful integration of tube end forming operations in metal additive manufacturing without the need for expensive hardware and complex deposition strategies.
