Summary: The neuroendocrine-stress axis in nonmammalian species is evolutionarily conserved and serves as an important model system for understanding the stress response in vertebrates. Hormones of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis play a key role in regulating stress and reproduction in various vertebrates. However, in fish, the stress response is controlled by a number of neurochemicals in association with the hypothalamo-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis or independent of it, with a growing emphasis on the involvement of neurohormones like dopamine and opioid peptides in regulating the stress-reproductive axis.
