Apocynin prevents cigarette smoking-induced loss of skeletal muscle mass and function in mice by preserving proteostatic signalling

Stanley M. H. Chan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the potent Nox inhibitor apocynin can mitigate cigarette smoke-induced muscle dysfunction by protecting muscle mass and strength through inhibition of ROS production, providing a new pharmacological strategy for COPD patients.

Neutrophils in respiratory viral infections

Cecilia Johansson et al.

Summary: Viral respiratory infections can cause severe diseases, especially in vulnerable populations like infants and the elderly. Neutrophils are important immune cells that play a role in host defense, but their exact role in viral infections, which replicate intracellularly, is still unclear. Tight regulation of neutrophils is necessary in the lungs to prevent damage to host tissues.

Previous Influenza Infection Exacerbates Allergen Specific Response and Impairs Airway Barrier Integrity in Pre-Sensitized Mice

Kevin Looi et al.

Summary: This study found that challenge with ovalbumin or house dust mite in mice resulted in bronchoalveolar inflammation, with previously infected mice showing higher levels of OVA-specific IgE in serum. Mice previously infected, sensitized, and challenged with OVA were most responsive to methacholine, while HDM challenge caused significant increases in tissue damping and tissue elastance. Influenza infection was associated with decreased claudin-1 expression and occludin expression in OVA or HDM-challenged mice, demonstrating the importance of respiratory epithelium in pre-sensitized individuals.

Summary: This report reviews the impact of AECOPD on muscle dysfunction in COPD, highlighting the negative effects of AECOPD on muscle function and its underlying mechanisms. Novel treatment options should focus on the enhanced drivers of muscle dysfunction during AECOPD.
