A competing risks regression model for the association between time-varying opioid exposure and risk of overdose

Xingyuan Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a competing risks regression model to estimate the association between longitudinal patterns of opioid exposure and cumulative incidence of opioid overdose. The model addresses challenges related to exposure variation, cumulative effects, and competing risks, and is able to differentiate different opioid prescription patterns.

Association of combination opioid, benzodiazepine, and muscle relaxant usage with emergency department visits in a nationwide cohort in the United States

Jonathan Hirohiko Watanabe et al.

Summary: The prevalence of opioid, benzodiazepine, and muscle relaxant use in the US increased from 2013 to 2014, with a rise in double-threat patients and a stable rate of triple-threat patients. Both double-threat and triple-threat users had significantly increased probability of emergency department visits, emphasizing the need for enhanced surveillance, prescribing practices, and follow-up measures to address this public health concern.

Spontaneous Reports of Serious Adverse Drug Reactions Resulting From Drug-Drug Interactions: An Analysis From the French Pharmacovigilance Database

Louis Letinier et al.

Summary: The study found that hemorrhage was the most common clinical manifestation of serious adverse drug reactions resulting from drug-drug interactions reported in France, followed by renal failure, pharmacokinetic alteration, and cardiac arrhythmias. More than one-third of serious adverse drug reactions involved at least three drugs.

Temporal Trends in Opioid Prescribing Practices in Children, Adolescents, and Younger Adults in the US From 2006 to 2018

Madeline H. Renny et al.

Summary: The study revealed a decreasing trend in opioid dispensing rates for patients younger than 25 years, with decreasing rates of high-dosage and long-duration prescriptions for adolescents and younger adults. However, opioids remain readily prescribed, and high-risk prescribing practices appear to be common, especially in younger children.

Opioid Use and Driving Performance

Keaton T. Cameron-Burr et al.

Summary: This review assesses the current literature regarding opioids in relation to neurocognitive function, driving performance, and accident risk. Illicit use, initiation of therapy, and opioid use in combination with other psychoactive medications are contexts most clearly associated with impairment of driving-related functions and/or operation of a motor vehicle. Clinicians should counsel patients on the risk of impairment when initiating therapy, co-prescribing opioids and other psychoactive drugs, or when a patient is suspected of having an opioid use disorder.
