Probiotic potential of Lactobacillus isolated from horses and its therapeutic effect on DSS-induced colitis in mice

Songkang Qin et al.

Summary: In this study, four isolates of Lactobacillus with probiotic potential were isolated from the fresh feces of healthy male adult horses. Their biological characteristics were analyzed and they showed tolerance to acid, bile salt concentration, and simulated artificial gastrointestinal fluid. They also exhibited antibacterial and antioxidant activities. One isolate, Lactobacillus plantarum A3, was able to reduce symptoms of ulcerative colitis in mice, suggesting it could be a potential treatment for IBD.

Butyrate functions in concert with myeloid-derived suppressor cells recruited by CCR9 to alleviate DSS-induced murine colitis

Tengfei Xiao et al.

Summary: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a precancerous disease caused by a combination of genetic susceptibility, environmental factors, and microbiota dysbiosis. Butyrate has been shown to alleviate DSS-induced colitis by inhibiting proinflammatory mediators and synergistically regulating with MDSCs through CCR9 recruitment.

Structural characterization of polysaccharide from yellow sweet potato and ameliorates DSS-induced mice colitis by active GPR41/MEK/ERK 1/2 signaling pathway

Xiaojuan Feng et al.

Summary: A polysaccharide extracted from yellow sweet potato showed anti-inflammatory activity in a mouse acute colitis model by regulating the secretion of inflammatory factors and promoting the production of anti-inflammatory factors. The mechanism may involve the activation of the GPR41/MEK/ERK1/2 signaling pathway and the increase in short chain fatty acids production.

The role of short-chain fatty acids in intestinal barrier function, inflammation, oxidative stress, and colonic carcinogenesis

Pinyi Liu et al.

Summary: Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), produced during bacterial fermentation of dietary fiber, play crucial roles in regulating inflammation, carcinogenesis, intestinal barrier function, and oxidative stress. Their signaling mechanisms involve histone acetylation promotion and activation of G-protein-coupled receptors. SCFAs have a wide range of positive effects and show high therapeutic potential in human-related diseases.

Effect of medium chain fatty acid in human health and disease

P. G. Roopashree et al.

Summary: Medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) are rapidly metabolized in the body and can improve metabolic features and cognition in humans. They may exert their effects through direct receptor-mediated intracellular pathways, as well as indirectly by altering circulating levels of hormones and metabolites to mediate body metabolism. Additionally, MCFA-enriched diets could potentially be used to manage metabolic diseases through modification of gut microbiota and activation of specific receptors like GPR 40 and GPR 84.

Alessandro Armuzzi et al.

Summary: Ulcerative colitis, as a chronic inflammatory disease, significantly impacts the quality of life of patients, but effective treatment including biological therapies can restore and improve quality of life. Current treatment options involve conventional medications and biologic therapies, with some issues associated with anti-TNF antibodies, while JAK inhibitors show promise in improving disease manifestations and long-term quality of life outcomes. Further studies are needed to better understand the comparative effects of treatments on quality of life and patient preferences for therapy.

Fatty acids and evolving roles of their proteins in neurological, cardiovascular disorders and cancers

Rahul Mallick et al.

Summary: Dysregulation of fat metabolism is involved in various disorders, with long-chain fatty acid uptake and metabolism playing a crucial role in cellular metabolic homeostasis. Abnormal flow of fatty acids, whether from diet or adipose stores, can contribute to metabolic diseases. The cellular uptake and intracellular trafficking of fatty acids are facilitated with unique proteins in every tissue, and defects in transporters and metabolism of long-chain fatty acids are being increasingly linked to clinical implications.

Lactobacillus strains derived from human gut ameliorate metabolic disorders via modulation of gut microbiota composition and short-chain fatty acids metabolism

G. Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that Lactobacillus strains partly protect against diet-induced metabolic syndrome by mediating the recovery of short-chain fatty acids production, especially faecal acetic acid. Probiotics restore gut microbiota dysbiosis to some extent, thereby protecting against metabolic disorders, without fully reversing the changed composition of microbiota to the normal state.
