Lipoprotein(a), venous thromboembolism and COVID-19: A pilot study

Nick S. Nurmohamed et al.

Summary: This study found a significant association between the increase in Lp(a) levels during the acute phase of COVID-19 and the incidence of VTE. The increase in anti-fibrinolytic Lp(a) may contribute to the pro-thrombotic state in COVID-19 patients.

A clinical case definition of post-COVID-19 condition by a Delphi consensus

Joan B. Soriano et al.

Summary: People with COVID-19 might experience long-term symptoms known as long COVID or long-haul COVID. The lack of a standardized definition hinders the understanding and treatment of this condition. In a WHO-led Delphi process, a consensus definition was developed, stating that post-COVID-19 condition occurs in individuals with a history of SARS-CoV-2 infection, with symptoms lasting for at least 2 months and impacting everyday functioning. This common framework provides a foundation for future studies and therapy.

Long-term cardiovascular outcomes of COVID-19

Yan Xie et al.

Summary: Individuals with COVID-19, even those who were not hospitalized during the acute phase of the infection, are at an increased long-term risk of various cardiovascular disorders. A study using national healthcare databases found that beyond the first 30 days after infection, individuals with COVID-19 have an elevated risk of developing cerebrovascular disorders, heart diseases, and other cardiovascular complications. The risk increases depending on the care setting during the acute phase.

Prevention of Cardiovascular Burden in COVID-19 Patients Suffering from Familial Hypercholesterolemia: A Global Challenge

Alpo Vuorio et al.

Summary: A recent meta-analysis revealed a more than fourfold higher mortality rate for hospitalized COVID-19 patients with acute myocardial injury. The study also highlighted the increased risk of myocardial injury in FH patients and emphasized the ongoing risk of ASCVD and its complications after COVID-19. Risks associated with ASCVD are likely to persist due to reduced outpatient preventive care during the pandemic, particularly affecting high-risk patients like those with FH.

Familial hypercholesterolaemia and COVID-19: A two-hit scenario for endothelial dysfunction amenable to treatment

Alpo Vuorio et al.

Summary: Patients with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) are at increased risk for COVID-19 complications, with a focus on lowering LDL-C levels through statin use to mitigate cardiovascular risks. Epidemiologic data on FH patients and COVID-19 severity are needed to understand the increased risk and severity of infections.

Long COVID: long-term effects?

Alessandro Di Toro et al.

Summary: Long COVID, characterized by persistence of symptoms for at least 12 weeks after COVID-19 onset, presents a clinically heterogeneous condition with involvement of multiple organs/systems, including the cardiovascular system. Recurrent symptoms include fatigue, breathlessness, myalgia, headache, and impaired concentration, with potential cardiovascular manifestations such as palpitations and chest pain. Diagnostic criteria remain narrative-based with a need for shared diagnostic framework integrating biomarkers, imaging, and clinical monitoring for at-risk patients.

A Vessel for Change: Endothelial Dysfunction in Cerebral Small Vessel Disease

Sophie Quick et al.

Summary: Brain endothelial cells not only regulate blood flow to the brain, but also interact with surrounding brain tissue. Dysfunction of these cells can lead to diseases like cerebral small vessel disease, impacting vascular dementia. Researchers are exploring the causes and effects of endothelial dysfunction in brain pathology, aiming to pave the way for future dementia therapies.

Patterns ofmyocardial injury in recovered troponin-positive COVID-19 patients assessed by cardiovascular magnetic resonance

Tushar Kotecha et al.

Summary: Troponin elevation is common in hospitalized COVID-19 patients, and recovered patients can exhibit myocarditis-like injury and ischemic heart disease, with possible ongoing localized inflammation. However, there is no evidence of diffuse fibrosis or edema in the remote myocardium.

Familial hypercholesterolemia and COVID-19: A menacing but treatable vasculopathic condition

Alpo Vuorio et al.

Summary: COVID-19 has a significant impact on endothelial function, especially in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), a metabolic inherited disease known to worsen endothelial function. It is crucial to continue statin therapy in severe hypercholesterolemic patients with COVID-19, and clinicians may need to consider intensifying statin therapy, as well as adding other lipid-lowering agents, such as PCSK9 inhibitors, in FH patients with COVID-19. Long-term follow-up of individualized therapies in FH patients is necessary due to the persisting vasculopathic effects of COVID-19.
